New Trig - need some advice

Post by budgietas » 19 September 11 9:13 am

Hi

I was out walking the other day and found a trig site.

The only problems are
a) It's unlisted
b) It's behind a fence marked Danger - which I am sure is electricified
c) It's on top of a steep embankment next to a road

Please see picture.

I was standing at S42 49.287, E147 18.146

Is this a trig we can log? and due to it's location would you need to get within the fence to do so?

I can see something in the aerial view.
http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=S42+49 ... 6&t=h&z=20

I would consider the following:
a. You can't get to the trig. There are other trigs you can get near to, but not actually to, so this is not a bar.
b. You need to stop at the side of the road. That looks very dangerous given the street view of the road.
c. I can barely see the TP in the photo.
d. You appear to be about 100m from the TP.
e. Is it actually a TP or some other type of station? Without getting to it, that's an unknown.

Considering the above, I would say no, but that's just an opinion, not an official position.

ETA: Yaaaargh!

While I am not familiar with Tasmanian Trigs, if you can see the trig clearly and you can get a picture from as close as you can get (without breaking the law of the land!) you can claim it as a find, I could not see anything that looked like a trig from the photo posted, but that is probably just me do tend to miss the obvious, however if you can get closer to the fence in safety and take the photo go ahead and log it.
If it is not listed you can do that yourself and create a new listing for it.

This may be a good thread for a poll (Y/N), to get the opinion of the wider GCA community?
From the description and picture of the site, I'd say no it's not loggable. :)

This trig is white IIRC.

It's near the pole to the right of the sign

You can get to the other side of it during business hours I think: http://g.co/maps/bjrk3

I have adjusted the image - this might help

Image

I am about 80 metres away at the co-ordinates and the photo was taken on my Iphone. From where I was it is definently a trig point and not one that is currently out there on the system.

You can get to the other side of the fence, but it is in the techno park and therefore private property. I am just not sure if they would like somebody wandering up and taking a photo of there trig point.

I will try to get closer and get a proper photo

As CraigRat suggests, access durin' business hours be doable. If ye list it, make a note 'o "business hours" only, point them at th' appropriate gate to come through 'n Bob's ye uncle.

Arrr you sure it's a trigg?
Given it's location it could be a benchmark or control point for construction of, and subsequent monitoring of movement in, the bridge.
There's probably one on the other side too, maybe more

We too are interested in the community's response to this question. There is one near Durdiwarrah, one near Daylesford windfarm and one at Mt Gaspard in Victoria. None seem to have been published.

All are well into private property but are clearly visible from the road as trigs - they have the disks atop the 4 legs. They are probably 3 to 400 metres from the road and show up okay in photos.

They taunt us as we travel the roads fairly often.
