QR code dinosaurs for National Science Week
Some of you might be interested in the virtual dinosaurs that are around for National Science Week - see http://www.scienceweek.gov.au/National/ ... fault.aspx They are not geocaches and not munzees, but an interesting idea (at least I thought so!). You need a smartphone to see the dinosaurs, so unfortunately the DDTs can't go hunting them.

Re: QR code dinosaurs for National Science Week
They've made an addon for an app called Layar, a AR app.
(a good analogy is that it's bit like a kml file for google earth)
Might have a look tomorrow, my kids love dinosaurs!

Re: QR code dinosaurs for National Science Week
This is definitely worth checking out.
We wandered around Adelaide on Sunday afternoon hunting dinosaurs, along with, it seemed, about 100 families doing the same thing. We didn't have much luck, a few bugs in the system it seemed, had to re-start the app a few times, and only found a couple of dinosaurs when in theory we should have been in proximity to a lot more.
Had more luck walking to work from the bus stop on Monday and if the weather was better we'd be out looking for more.
This is the sort of thing you end up with - here's me casually walking away from a T-rex in Victoria Square:

Damnit!! There is an iPhone god, and it hates me!
I have this issue with munzees as well. :S
(If anyone knows how to fix this, without the obvious solution - get an iPhone 4, please do share )

Re: QR code dinosaurs for National Science Week
To those taking part in the Dino hunting - I have a limited number of National Science Week pathtags from the event held at the CSIRO Discovery Centre last weekend.
Post here or send me (scienceweek@geowhat.com.au or via PM) a link to any image taken at one of the Dinosaur coordinates (should look like Team Wibble's image) and your snail mail address - and I'll pop one in the mail! They will be on a first come first serve basis, and a kind request of one per household, please.
Team Wibble, since you've already filled the requirements, PM your snail mail address.

Re: QR code dinosaurs for National Science Week
We found two dinosaurs today.
One was a pterodactyl and it was too high in the air to get a good photo.
The one on the ground kept on moving around.
How do you even know where they are? They only show up when your 50m away from them?

Tried this today. It was pretty frustrating actually. I don't think the app uses the GPS for your location. I ran up another app in the background and checked my accuracy to 20m, but my location in layar kept jumping all over the place and out of range of the dinosaur. I got there eventually.

If you go to http://www.scienceweek.gov.au/National/ ... fault.aspx and scroll about half way down the page and click on your state there is some extra information. The amount varies from state to state (I have no idea why). For some states there are coordinates, for others just a few hints. At the moment there are big orange stickers near each dinosaur, but these will apparently be taken down in the next day or so (and some have been stolen . . .) I am told the dinosaurs will be around until the end of August - and possibly longer.

Re: QR code dinosaurs for National Science Week
we were in Canberra for the weekend and found a couple of the dinosaurs - unfortunately couldn't get my phone to take a photo while using the app Still it was an added bit of fun for the day.
