Back on topic placed a 4x4 only munzee on Monday. Don't think it will be found for a long long time.

Is that the one up near Amphitheatre which is waiting to be dressed up?

Decided to look at this Munzee thing while bored the other day, downloaded the app and found some nearby, scanned the thing.... thought, is that it...? shows up I've found one, so went to another one, scanned it, but nothing happened, the app failed to connect a few times, I eventually read that the site was down, grrr. Ah well, will try some others and maybe create some and see how we go. I think caches are more interesting but the munzees maybe incorporated with caches idea could work.

I had a text this morning from a friend telling me they had deployed some munzees in our area. I already had the phone and the app so I logged onto the site and registered. Found where the munzees were. One on my way to work this morning. Captured it and have a score of 5 on the phone. BUT when I tried all day to log in on the web it kept telling me I was using an invalid username or password.
Yes I did get the email and yes I did click the link and confirm the joining up. I clicked on the link forgot password at about 10am this morning. Still waiting for the email they said was sent to arrive. Did it a second time and have had no better results.

Any suggestions????

They have been having problems with their website over the past few days. That might explain the flakey access.

From the munzee devs

"We are working very hard to get everything back to normal, unfortunately a lot of things are out of our control. Hopefully later today, everything will be back to normal."

I think the simple answer to that is "No"... and while Im sure they are pleased, they are perhaps rather overwhelmed right now ;) It'll come good, just needs time. I can use the app and log onto the forums, just not the website proper.

Now there has been an mistake made requiring the server to be cycled, but they need to wait until Saturday morning US time to be able to access it.
They do have a Facebook page with updates as to the status.

Once again a new thing has been started up, and like others I have downloaded the app onto the phone.

Not sure what the "business model" is to fund things as it grows, and I have never tried logging onto the website to see if it is advertising supported. Good luck with that anyway as I don't think I have ever clicked onto a web ad.

It might end up being fun, time will tell. Whether the business model is sustainable time will also tell. GC worked theirs out with premium membership, GCA relies on donations and shop sales. How Munzee plan on going forward only they know.

The good guesses on Munzee Money Making are coming from the circle who realised the fact 2 the game has as much in common with 4square and other geolocation games as it does with caching.

The Devs had said "No Adds" and that Munzee/The app will always be free for the players to capture and deploy.

They have just put a (dead) link on the website "Munzee for businesses".

Chatter and educated guesses among the community is this ... re-scanable Munzees (like 4square check-ins)

A Munzee can at the moment only be scanned once by a player, then is locked so they cant get more points. Rumour is business looking to attract repeat local customers will be able to purchase special Munzees which allow players to "re-scan / check in" on a weekly or daily basis to receive more points and/or discounts at the premises. As long as the points for rescan are very low compared to the initial win I dont have a problem with this. I never played 4square or anything like that but Munzee is definitely showing signs of being a 4square / Geocaching Hybrid. How this will be received by the competitive members of the community is yet to be seen. But for those not worried about points it wont change anything for them. Non-invasive, which is good.

Opencaching.org.uk just added a Munzee Attribute to their listings today too! :D

So, what, a month before they headed down the profit path?
Shame, shame, shame.

The idea was conceived as a commercial notion, never been a secret. At the moment I am more worried about how they treat the community, not if they turn a dollar or not... and so far, the guys have been excellent. If they turn around and try to charge me or somehow try force the commercialisation upon me by saying I must do something Im gone... but something has to pay the bills and if they want to charge coffee shops and maybe even get me a half price cappuccino in the process Im happy with that ;)

Going to get crowded on the coffee shop counters with things like hopshopper and ecoffee card loyalty schemes already using QR codes.

A shop I semi-regularly go to started using hopshopper a few months ago and I collected a few 'stamps'. Then they changed to ecoffee card and I collected a few more 'stamps' with that until the app was updated and I lost them so I went back to the old-school cardboard loyalty card. Tech-burnout.

Yep... but this is geekier  We'll see where it goes. New things are always exciting when they are taking off... next week it could die in the ass or they could do something silly on the business front and everyone will lose (or was that loose in another thread :P) interest. I dont think so though. People tolerate GC's commercial Adds/TB's etc so as long as the devs dont do anything stupid it should keep being a fun game.

It will never replace caching for me, but Im having fun playing it alongside caching in the summer over here when I have lots of free time. Once I become restricted with work I'll probably just fall back on caching and only Munzee when it lines up with a box in the woods :D
