You say Tomato, I say ..... pronunciation of the word cache

Post by Damo. » 15 October 04 8:40 am

I have been wondering how people on the forum pronounce Geocache and Geocaching. <br>
"Cash" or "Caysh"<p>

I edited to add the word "Cache" to the Thread Title as this topic once again raised it's head. In future searching should be able to find it. <br>

Unfortunately I deleted the poll results which on 04/09/05 were as follows:
<p>
How do you pronounce Geocaching?<br>
"Cash" 16% [ 17 ]<br>
"Caysh" 78% [ 82 ]<br>
Other. 2% [ 3 ]<br>
Who cares. 1% [ 2 ]<br>
Total Votes : 104

<p>
No point in replacing the poll at this stage. Thanks to those who voted.

Looking forward to the results of this one, I think it's been talked about before in another thread, but not a poll.
<p>
I'm a Caysher and proud of it, I realize it's probably incorrect, but I get a lot of things wrong anyway, so why not add that too!

I say cayshed - but this backfired on me because my name is meant to be "All Cashed Up" (and nowhere to go). But I call myself "All Cayched Up" now so I sorta lost the smart ass edge of it. Doh!!

G'day,
<p>
I'm very glad to see that, at least so far, 100% of people pronounce it the Australian way, that is, caysh. I've even made that point on my web site,
<p>
Cheers,
<p>

Are there really that many people who think that the "Geo" is silent?!

It's "Cash"

see http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=CACHE

the pronunciation key is quite explicit.

(I may be in the minority with one vote so far
:D but I'm correct :!:)

"Caysh" seems right in this country because if it was supposed to be pronounced "Cash" it would be spelt C A S H.

The English lanuguage is the problem here.

For instance Mache is pronounced Mashay. So maybe Cache should be pronounced Cashay.

Well, after hunting around online for an Australian English dictionary, then realising I had one in the bookshelf behind me, I was astonished to discover that "cash" was the "proper" pronunciation. The idea of a having a "weapons cash" just seems a bit odd, I'm sure I've always used caysh. I always wondered why my (English) mother always referred to me going geocashing, now I know.

Oh, and mache is from papier mache I think, and there's supposed to be an accent above the e - hence the "mashay" pronunciation.

Yep - Kath and myself are both cayshers, we don't speak with a southern drawl either :twisted: . <p>And if you don't like the way we say it, we're sorry, but that's how its pronounced down here (it seems by the majority at least). :roll: :roll: <p> :lol: Perhaps one day the rest of the world will realise their errors and prounce it our way :lol: <p> Majority rules ok!
