Geocaching is for geeks? (ABC Radio 25 May 2011)

Post by Yurt » 25 May 11 12:18 pm

Apparently today is Geek Pride Day (don't ask me). On ABC Radio's 702 Sydney Adam Spencer got people to ring up about geeky things they do.
A woman ('Rosie') rang to tell him about geocaching, which he hadn't heard of. She described a recent trip to Nelson Bay and how they got the kids interested (the 'kids' were late teens, early 20s!). She didn't mention a GPS at all but said there were 'clues' on the internet and you could find 'prizes' in the caches. She also said you could move some of them on so she must be a GCA cacher talking about movables.
Adam 'got' it straight away, describing a possible scenario, and asked if he just Googled geocaching he'd find out more to which she replied in the affirmative. You might see him out there!
This was on about 645am.

But a 'geek' sport? Really????? :gnome

There were also a few other cachers who called up latter on and mentioned it used GPS. One who challanged geocaching the notion that caching was more main stream than geeky.

Heard this on 702 Sydney this morning.

Sounds like Adam knows about geocaching. But I wonder who Rosie is?

Actually he sounded like he'd never heard of it ("geo casing") but picked up the concept fairly quickly.

I also heard something on 3AW in Melbourne in the past week on one of the earlier shows before Neil Mitchell. One of the radio jocks thought it sounded rather boring, but unfortunately I wasn't able to continue listening to see if they had any callers about it.

Anybody else hear it on air?

No one 'gets it' in that space of time. I suspect it's the magic of radio. Let the caller think they've taught you something.

I'll go back into the archive at work and grab the other calls.

I'm informed we geocachers rated a mention on Triple J this afternoon - not sure of the context as I didn't hear it but no doubt some smart cookie out there will dig it up!

How's that saying go ... isn't it:

"Geocaching is what happens when geeks get outdoors".

Picked that up from a Geocaching.com forum (funny sayings about geocaching) a couple of years back.

Loved it!
