Do GPS revievers need altering after the earthquake?

Post by Renroc » 13 March 11 3:40 pm

This article suggests that Japan has moved 2.4m according to GPS readings.
I am wondering will this require a new set of datum for them and possibly other rim of fire nations?? Isn't it amazing what nature can do to the planet we live on.

A very good question!

Unless the datum is somehow fixed on Japan (doubtful) you would think that the answer is yes!

Yes there is some work to do to determine what has gone where and make adjustments to the network. Even if it was fixed on Japan like GDA is to Australia then there is still work to actually determine what is what.

NZ has to do similar adjustments on a regular basis to account for movement in the control network.
