A Cache-Fest

Post by Jessica (Mama Bear Left) » 07 May 03 11:26 pm

You know, the one thing that could be improved on Leek's otherwise brilliant Fifth Element cache, would be if it was played as part of a cache-fest, ie if you could only hide a bug in your own brand new cache. That way, no-one would have the advantage of having already done certain caches, so being able to just pop in to the final cache and collecting a bug. No-one would really know how easy or otherwise a cache might be. Waddya reckon?

Good idea

A good Idea, but how about for another cache on similar lines, a bit late in the day for the rest of us that are either thinking about or wanting to go after 5Th element now that the rush is off first finder bragging rites..... and a bit unfair don't you think? I was hoping to join in the initial flurry when 5th Element was released, but work and family committments killed any chance of me going after the bugs, so now you want to make it harder again? After you have already completed? No,sorry,I would have to protest that. But if you wish to go ahead and set up your own style of tb hunt for new caches along a similar style, go right ahead. But I will leave it up to LEEK to set the rules for his cache.

Yes, Swampgecko, sorry if I was unclear: we were thinking of a new cache, not of changing the Fifth Element itself. Like, Fifth Element Cache is/was so much fun, it seems like our responsibility to try to create another fun one, but different. Part of it would be to bring it wider, and bigger, so it has to last longer. And part is to make sure you can only get a bug by solving a cache, not by knowing them. We are working on an idea now that would ask for a number of volunteer teams (either 7 or thirteen) to each create their own really special cache that they would keep under wraps until given the TB to put in at launch date. None too hard(diff1.5-3.5), but yr favorite places, and using yr creativity. (It could also serve as a taster for newbies to get the flavour of the caches our different teams specialise in). I won't be changing the rules for the Fifth Element cache, but I think the Bear's have a good suggestion...

My only concern is that it might slow the game down a bit (or a score of easy caches littered all over the city)...

If there is a next one, with the benefit of experience, I might fine-tune the rules slightly to reduce the advantage gained by experienced cachers... (e.g. You're not allowed to pick up the bug within 24 hours of its placement if it's in your own cache or if you've already completed the cache)

Sorry, I wasn't trying to spoil your fun. We were actually conscious of the people not yet in the game, and very nearly put a bug into Michael to broaden the field and give you guys a chance to join in. But it was so far to drive and we did that drive SOOO many times doing Michael.
However, I was also thinking that if anyone else now wanted to enjoy the race effect of the 5th Element, two or more teams could do it competitively by agreement at any time, following Leek's rules naturally, and using their own fresh caches if they so chose. Or it could just be announced on the Forum that the Fifth Element is on again, previous players need not apply.
Enjoy,

It does appear that EcoTeam have already adopted this approach, with two new caches providing homes for Elements! (As did our reanimated Warlock.)

BearLeft would like to provide a framework for something like this, and we'll float it in the next couple of days in the Groper forum.

We're thinking of contributing some reasonable prizes to the final cache; something like a night in a good hotel for the first finder. (Or whatever we can think of that'll fit the theme...)

It'll be our farewell present to NSW geocaching before we head East to Christchurch. (Where they paint their containers white to camouflage them in the snow!)

Watch these coordinates...
