New GCA Virtual - Donate to Queensland Floods

Post by Richary » 11 January 11 11:18 pm

GCA cache listing basically started because everyone got annoyed when GC blocked the donation virtual that Team Piggy set up to donate to the Asian Tsunami Appeal. Well now we have a massive disaster here.

I have set up a virtual cache where you can log a smiley by making a donation to one of the Queensland flood appeals. I hope it encourages at least a few people to donate something they wouldn't have otherwise, whether it's $1 or a million I don't care. The footage I have seen on youtube and the TV is just unbelievable.

Given the history of GCA and the infamous Tsunami cache, good to see the tradition continuing.
cheers Darren :)

Thanks Richary, this was a timely reminder for me to do something - and now I have!

We donated to one of the relief funds (my company offered a matching donation), but I used a credit card, not my GPSr.

We shouldn't need a smiley for _everything_ we do, only the ones that involve, you know, geo-location and hidden caches...

You are right - a smiley is not all that important to get for this. But I do think it's a great idea becasue every action that adds to the help is worth doing. In this case, the easy-to-access information on richary's cache page prompted me to send the details to our HR people at work with a sugestion it be circulated which, in turn, resulted in an immediate email to all staff with an easy-to-follow link to the donation web page.

When I think about it, the chain of action was so quick! So I defintiely think richary will have inspired more than just the odd one or two additional donations. Of course many will have given somehow in any case but there are always some who meant to but didn't get around to it for some reason.

And I LIKE the idea that we, as an Aussie geocaching community, have been able to do something together to help a bit. :)

My donation has been in time. 7 days straight, each day 12 hrs approx, at Theodore, with a heap of other people (some days in excess of 30) helping clean up the mess there.

Hi Bundy. I hadn't thought of that, all the people volunteering. I will open the cache listing up to those who have been helping out as well. Having seen all the volunteers in Brisbane on the weekend they deserve a smiley as much as someone who donates - even though I know they weren't doing it for that reason. As do you guys up in Rocky who have been helping out, and also anyone in Victoria dealing with the new floods there.

We are heading back to Dimboola tomorrow afternoon to get our hands dirty as the floods hit there in the next few days.
Not looking forward to devastation that awaits the community
