http://www.opencaching.com/

Code: Select all

   Domain Name: OPENCACHING.COM
   Registrar: MARKMONITOR INC.
   Whois Server: whois.markmonitor.com
   Referral URL: http://www.markmonitor.com
   Name Server: NS.GARMIN.COM
   Name Server: NS2.GARMIN.COM
   Status: clientDeleteProhibited
   Status: clientTransferProhibited
   Status: clientUpdateProhibited
   Updated Date: 13-sep-2010
   Creation Date: 14-sep-2003
   Expiration Date: 14-sep-2012
The name servers are Garmin

Is this related to the recent removal of the GC logo from the latest firmware on the Oregon series?
Is Garmin spitting the dummy at Groundspeak and setting up their own listing sites?
Watch this space I suppose.

Creation date was in 2003 but recently renewed. This has been in the back of Garmins mind for a while.

I didn't think that Garmin had owned this for that long and a certain Rattus Rattus pointed me at this.

Garmin bought it at some point.

As someone who had tried for many years to obtain this domain name, I can safely say this is a relatively recent purchase. (I gave up pursuing it a few years ago)

Uh, oh. Secret's out.
Yes, CR and I sold GCA to Garmin for just under <Dr. Evil>One Hundred Billion Dollars</DE>

I don't know anything about Trademark or Copyright law, but I noticed something very familiar about the logo on http://www.opencaching.com (it's even more noticeable when you put the slightly-inclined "Leatherman" geocaching logo between the two):

Given the recent news about "Google" acquiring the name "Groggle", I'm surprised to see that little "TM" at the bottom...

Just a Friday thought about Groundspeak, Garmin and the problems with "Ex"s...

Open Caching started in Germany and is huge over there now... http://www.opencaching.de/ and now operate in many countries, most recently the US.

No real need them starting here, as they seem pretty similar to GCA in their goals from what I have seen. C@W would know better the differences...

Pretty much the same as us, athlough they appear to be happy with dual listing of caches, which is something we are less keen on.

The guys I've delt with have been pretty nice people, with pretty good intentions

I wonder how they will fell if garmin start using the opencaching name............

Plenty of room for everyone!

(I'm not an advocate for all-caches-on-one-site even if it was this one).

They are not too happy about it however they are also open to any proposition by Garmin. As of now no lawyer is involved (yet)
