Nightcaching headlamps

Post by Xraydelta1 » 06 October 10 8:30 am

Cachers, have a look in the catalogue at http://www.anaconda.com.au/Specials.aspx page 16

I have one of those Tactical 1W telescopic headlamps, it almost doubles as a data projector it's so bright. Who wants to hold a flashight in their teeth when you can have one of these jobbies!

Good deals on GPSr's too

No, I don't work for Anaconda, just sharing the info! \:D/

On a related note: I've noticed that bike headlamps are now reaching the point where they're TOO BRIGHT! In the past, they were made as bright as they could, consistent with reasonable battery life and weight (or generator load, back in the day), but high power LEDs are now so bright that bicycles are more dazzling than car headlamps, especially given that they're more unpredictable in where they're shining.

Similarly, how bright do you need your headlamp to be? Sure, sometimes it's nice to be able to see what the terrain is like across the valley, but lighting up the area like daylight defeats some of the purpose of night caching, surely?

We had some trouble with a stage of a nightcache on Monday night, the headlamps were not reaching far enough to find our marker and it wasn't until I pulled out the torch after a call had been made to Philipp that we spotted what we were looking for the moment the torch was turned on. So brighter headlamps are not always a bad thing, as I'm sure we wasted at least 30min there

I might head off to anaconda this week to have a look!

The one I have runs on two AAA batteries... and is fairly economical.

It has a telescopic lens, so you can have a bright point for distance or a large dimmer spot for area, it also has two brightness settings, as well as the strobe which seems standard on these things.

Back from anaconda, there was a delightful native in the store going feral at the registers, even the threats of calling the police on him still didn't stop him

Anyway I grabbed one, it takes 3xAAA and whilst the packet says batteries included on the back, there is none in there. I also checked out the tents on special and got another of my little caching backpacks, but this one matches the colour of my pram for those who have seen it :-$

Not a bad price for a local product. But don't be concerned if you miss out. Can be had the same price from DX any day of the week.

Having spent some time deciding on a good headlamp some time ago, 3 criteria I chose for myself this one fails at.

1. Uses a battery with a decent capacity and one I already carry. This one runs on AAA's. My GPS uses AA's. I don't want another type of spare battery in my secondary cache bag (the one with spares) and another battery to keep charged.

2. All the weight is at the front. I like the balance of a battery pack at the rear.

3. Hinged light. Having the light fixed at one angle can become a hassle when instead you have to adjust your head to suit the light angle, should be the other way around - Adjust the angle of the light to suit your head angle. - Thanks Tatty

Anything to bring on some more night caching is a good thing :)

This anaconda one has a hinged light :) I agree with you there, the one I used Monday was fixed and it really started to annoy me about half way around the park.

"Like it"

I did write something about torches in general and that also included headlamps but there is nothing in there which isn't already in this thread:

With the benefit of infinitely variable light output and focusing (flood to throw feature), I have switched across to the (value for money) chinese knockoffs of the LedLenser H7 from Dealextreme 8-[. Can't complain for up to 130 lumens for around $20 delivered. =D>

Great for helmet use with gloves on (standard issue for geocachers, right? :-" )
