I haven't tried tiger balm, my tip for leeches is to spray the boots and bottom of the jeans with Aerogard before venturing bush, they don't like the taste of that either. I have seen the hop onto the shoes, have a taste and retreat.

Sorry, back to the main topic now.

But ticks I really hate and have nasty reactions to.
Not sure but you can give it a go. I've never had ticks on my feet.

Actually, bug repellents would be a great video topic.
Apply repellent, add bugs, video how they react.
Mozzies, ticks, leeches, butterflies, etc.

I've already learnt something, and you haven't even made the video yet!

I will certainly try the Aeroguard on the lower bits, the next time I am going where leeches might be. I get a nasty reaction to leeches, and it takes months to heal properly. I might even rub it on the dogs - carefully. I know that Aeroguard on the ears stops nasty flies biting dog ears.

I would like to see more useful hints for pain-free caching.
Please.

Wendy

Tried the Aerogard at the weekend (before Richary's log) as we attempted a FTF in a wet leech paradise. It seemed to work - we didn't get any leeches BUT we didn't see any leeches either. Normally we'll see them coming towards us when we stop for a moment.
Leeches irritate me too. I carry salt to get them off but the holes they make keep on bleeding. Then when healed they itch like crazy for weeks afterwards. I must have some sort of allergic reaction to their anticoagulant.

As for ticks I tend to get them in places where Tiger Balm is unlikely to be used (no not THERE!) - on the neck, back of head etc. Carry the tweezers and a hand lens to get them off. They also itch for weeks.

So a first aid kit for geocachers could be a good topic for the video!

May be too cold for leeches. they are usually active in warmer weather, when they come out of the ground. Eggs are laid in the ground.

Yes, ditto, happens to everyone. It's an enzyme in their saliva and the reason you don't feel them attach is because they also release an anaesthetic. It gives them maximum feeding time, so they can drop off, unless of course you see them.

You can still put tiger balm on your neck and the back of your head, just don't touch your eyes.

This is a good idea.

Definitely not too cold for leeches! I've got about 8 bites at present from leeches I picked up in bush some 3km from home!

Disconcerting when you think you've got them all off and then you spy one during your shower and think "where did THAT come from?"

(from between my toes it turns out)
