Railway tunnel (or other tunnel) caches

Post by Yurt » 16 July 10 6:31 pm

As a bit of a fan of old railway infrastructure and tunnels especially I was wondering if there was a list of caches in or near rail tunnels.
I've been to a few tunnels around the country before discovering geocaching but it's interesting to find out where they are.

A couple I've found (but not 'found')
Dark Side of the Moon
This one sounds fantastic.

And nearby:
Dub Side Of The Moon

Then there's this one that I'd never heard of (the tunnel that is).
Tunnel
This one isn't in a tunnel though but nearby apparently.

Is there a list? There doesn't seem to be a "bookmark list" for these on the caches I listed.
Thanks. Will make one if necessary.

Thanks this is great.

Here's a link to a list of all NSW railway tunnels. It includes abandoned and in-use tunnels. Plenty more opportunities there by the look of it.

Nice link and useful for cache placement if the lines are no longer in use at all and publicly accessible.

I have also come across one cache down near Batemans Bay that was in an abandoned tunnel from old mine workings (stop before you reach the bats by the way). That was a good one.

Another Tassie tunnel- Tunnel for Tin GCR5QC , in Qld, Boolboonda Tunnel GC1Q8D9 and I also happen to own a cache called Tunnel GC1WR7M which is also not at a tunnel, but close by to where there used to be one.

Cheers

Since we are building up a reasonable list, would it be good to add tags to all the caches that are being listed, and then the complete list can just be dragged up by looking at the tag?

Just a thought, and an opportunity to make use of GCA's features :D

A couple around Toowoomba - neither are in tunnels, but both are very close.
Tunnel Vision GC1VQW9 - gives good views to a portal of one of the tunnels on the Toowoomba range. AFAIK of the 9 tunnels on the Toowoomba range, this is the only portal that is visible from public land.
Dragon's Lair GCC490 - this is near a 287m long, straight tunnel through the great divide on the now abandoned Oakey-Cooyar branch line. The tunnel was opened in 1912.

Were there ever any hills big enough to have to bore tunnels through in WA?

This one is near (bit not really close to) the famous Glow Worm Tunnel near Newnes, NSW. We walked the tunnel last year but didn't realise this wasn't far away at the time. Tunnel itself is fantastic.
