Security Scare. I guess it had to happen.

Post by Team Ladava » 06 June 10 6:55 pm

I have just received this email re. our Tulla Travel Bug Motel near Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport.

Hello Team Ladava,
I just found your Travel Bug Hotel cache. (Great hiding place!!)
However, I must inform you that as I was replacing the post, two
Australian Federal Police officers approached in a car and spent the
better part of an hour questioning me. They said that it appeared that I
had done nothing wrong, but did a full background check. They removed the
cache and took it away for testing. They have since contacted me and told
me that all was ok and that they had replaced the cache. They have asked
me to warn other cachers that they may be questioned by AFP officers if
they are caching so close to a major airport.
It is possible that they may contact you about the cache.
With kind regards,

At this stage I see no reason to archive the cache but I guess to all potential finders, beware or at least prepared.

Regards
Ian
Team Ladava

That's surprising, it is a bit away I would have thought it would be OK, especially with that hide...

I wouldn't have thought that hide would have been any sort of problem, nowhere near anything except a carpark!

Feds aren't known for their sense of fun and adventure, apparently. 8-[
So far only national parks depts and a few councils have tightened the screws on caching!

FYI this is the cache (yellow pin).

Not near the airport, but under the flight path (as are one or two of mine).

Apparently not. They actually took it away for testing????? What the blazes is happening to this country? Imagine what it's going to be like in another 10 years. Doesn't bear thinking about. :(

The three Tulla Time caches are closer to the airport than the travel bug motel... and they look dodgier... but I still loved em! =D>

After reading this thread, I'm now a little worried about my three "Tulla Time" caches. I guess I haven't done anything illegal, and they certainly don't look threatening in any way, so I'll leave them there, unless people think otherwise?

Are they on airport property?
If yes and you got permission -> OK.
If yes and you did not get permission -> Whoops.

Are they on private property?
If yes and you got permission -> OK.

During my caching-life I got busted about 5 times - once by two cops with MP5s (machinepistols). From what I've seen of Australian law-enforcements this shouldn't be a big deal down here. Just yesterday a police-helicopter landed right next to me in the park (you should have seen my face - they were only doing some rescue training next to the beach of Elwood and stoped for their lunch break) However: Nice guys - it's always good to have a relaxed chat.

For the cache itself: Try to use a translucent container. I know using painted sistemas is common but a clear casing and the word "Geocache" written on the outside might safe the bomb-squad if called some trouble.

... just the 0,02 € of German ex-reviewer :D

Leave them. They aren't near any terminals or restricted areas, and they are clear so you can easily view the contents.
