A while ago I came across a hitch-hiker (Ernie) that I picked up from a cache.

He has a tag that reads:
My name is Ernie. I like to travel around Australia and see the sights. I am not afraid of heights, but I am not too happy about water as it makes me cold and clammy. If you can fit me in, please give me a lift.

Now, I haven't done anything yet with this hitch-hiker as I have been trying to find out who owns it and ask whether they want an email address or some other 'logable' tag attached to him before I sent him on his way. To date I havn't been able to track it back to an owner.

Should I be caring about this or should I just shove him into the next cache I find and let him travel without anyone caring where he goes?

I last saw Ernie up here in 1 in 100.... nice to know he is still kicking around. My understanding is that hitch hikers were sort of like TB's without the tracking facility. Just drop him off in a cache and set him free.

We picked up the Dubbo Duck Hitchhiker, he had a letter inside him with a contact email address so we were able to notify the owners.

I picked up Ernie when a group of us went up to Dubbo for A-DAG and stopped by to find a few caches in Albury.

He was in a fairly new cache, so I decided to move him on and sent an email to the cache owner, explaining what I had done with him, but I never had a response.

Hi BeccaJ, I got your original email about that.
It turns out that the cache owner didn't own the hitch-hiker and doesn't know where he got it.
I'll just dump Ernie into another cache in the next week and away he will go.

Just added it to the discussion to see if other people had seen him round. He was the first hiker I've moved, so I would love to know what the little blighter has been up to.

You could always attach a TB tag to him and then he'd be easy to track
