The pedant in me just had to refresh this thread with this pearler that arrived on the scene yesterday.

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_de ... ababcf6cde

Where to start.... spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalisation, definitions. It's all there....

I even went looking to see if there was a locationless GCA cache for such things (might have to set that one up!) - and then came across this equally wonderful cache: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_de ... wp=GC1K7DE

That cache is placed by a local teacher who has some really good hides. I'm not sure why that cache would cause any concern.

Oh, you misunderstand me... I'm not concerned by that one.... I was saying 'wonderful' in a true sense (as it's a brilliant cache idea and I had a great time reading it), not sarcastically (as I might in regards to the other cache I mentioned!) Sorry!

I did give them a clue to the more egregious errors in it, but you can lead a horticulture...

Saw this one come up today and I just cringed:
http://coord.info/GC2HPMJ

I didn't even notice the error in the cache name at first either. Part of me hopes these are kids, but even so, there are spellcheckers available, and anyone old enough to place a cache and create a listing should surely know at least a little about punctuation, or at the very least have an adult overseeing the process.

At the age of 10 I could type, spell and punctuate better than this, and that was in the days of Commodore 64s with no spell checkers. But even at that age I cared about what I wrote, but I could be a.... well, pedant.

A rather clever quote from our literary bear, attributed to Dorothy Parker.

While I'm sure he doesn't really mean to imply anything disreputable about that specific cacher, I guess many of those 20,000 published caches have strained theUMP's usual equanimity. Perhaps he will relate to following piece by the same author. Just exchange the word "cachers" for "folk", "people" and "they":

Frustration

If I had a shiny gun,
I could have a world of fun
Speeding bullets through the brains
Of the folk who give me pains;

Or had I some poison gas,
I could make the moments pass
Bumping off a number of
People whom I do not love.

But I have no lethal weapon-
Thus does Fate our pleasure step on!
So they still are quick and well
Who should be, by rights, in hell.
