G'day AussieCacher and welcome to the community. I saw your profile a while ago (just a bit of a snoop  ) when you suddenly appeared in the top 10 cache finders in Oz and saw that your occupation was a "Professional Geocacher" and wondered how you managed to get paid to enjoy this game - but sadly we now know it is just not a reality  My hopes have been put back a few rungs!

Does anyone have any hints or tips? and whats an average price for a GPS or recommended finding tool lol. Any help will be appreciated.

Welcome!

I would recommend a guru. Look here: http://wiki.geocaching.com.au/wiki/Guru
They are cachers who are willing to answer questions, and maybe even take you out and show you stuff, and who live in your general area.

In the meantime, when you find a cache, you do a silly, happy little dance (not really!). Well, some people do. What you really do is sign the log sheet, and put the cache back where you found it. Then you log your 'find' online.

It's great fun!

A lot of people are using their iphones to find caches these days, but I am happy with a basic GPSr. When I started, I looked up a cache, zoomed in as far as I could on the map, and printed it all out, and took it with me. I found quite a few caches that way. However, it is much easier to use a GPS, so when I was sure I liked this obsession, I got one.

Well Phenom you are in luck. Adelaide is generally considered the GeoCaching Mecca of Australia (I could say its cause they have nothing else to do... but that would be mean :P haha) Check out the newbie threads under General Chit-Chat tab on selecting a GPS and getting started. Im lazy and gotta run but Im sure someone can post links if you need them :-k

Yep. Miine is a Garmin Oregon 300. I like the Garmin, as it can take GPX files from the website. The screen could be brighter, but you can't have everything.

I think the sort that are designed for in-car use aren't brilliant, though.

Avoid the in car ones for geocaching as they tend to lock to roads, but are useful in the car to let you drive to the nearest spot (usually!). Any basic GPS unit will work fine, as long as all you need to do is follow the arrow. If you are into serious bushwalks then spend a bit more on one you can load maps into - and there are a variety of free maps available that may not be as detailed as some you can buy but are fine for most uses.

Basically if you are just caching in the suburbs and surrounding areas, all you need on the GPS is the arrow to follow. You can use the online mapping tools here or a program like OziExplorer to plan the cache run on the PC before you leave and work out the relevant parking spots.

Hello, I'm Kieran, I live in Wodonga.

I recently bought a device accurate enough to go geocaching with (which the Nokia 6110 is NOT) and I've been out looking for a few caches in the local area.

I've used the 6110 in the past, with Trimble back when it was free. It led me to a few. Not as good/quick as a dedicated unit but occasionally I found myself interstate in a hurry with no time to download the local caches before I left.

Hey all.

let me intro me, Hobie1kanobie, avid 4x4'er,bowhunter, outdoorsperson, fisherman, survivalist BEERDRINKER....

whilst out Hill End way chasing some ferals, i was looking at some muddy 4x4 tracks, and as all good 4by drivers do, they walk the walk. with beer in hand, i was surveying the possible mud pitfalls and fallen timber, as i turned back to face my truck, i noticed something strange out the corner of my eye, WTF is this?

reached down picked up what i thought was rubbish,( thinking to myself, typical human laziness yet again) when i noticed, www, geocaching etc etc. i looked inside to find note book, pencils, info and some trinkets.

well bugger me, this looks like fun.. so i left my details on the note pad, took a smilie face sticker, left a VB stubby, full of course, drove home thinking, YEAH now i gotta join.

so here i am, i reside in the liverpool area, work in the botany area, love the great outdoors, married with 2 girls and with the help of my oldest one, will be searching for all the local ones first.

So, stay tuned and watch the progress. i just gotta figure out the lingo and all the tncltfln etc etc??????

so if you have any advice, PM me and say G'Day..

Cheers Hobie

Hi everybody :)
I'm Berrie, and I'm from Knox, in Victoria. I've been using my iphone to find my first 5 caches, and went out and bought a Garmin Etrex this afternoon. I was a Scout when I was younger, so I have a bit of experience on the hiking/bushwalking/orienteering side of things.
I usually bring my SO Marty with me, because I have some slight mobility issues, plus it's always good fun to get out in the fresh air with someone else. Anyway, it'll be good to get to know people! I noticed that someone found two of the caches I found today not long before I did, but I couldn't really read their handwriting, it looked like it said might have said 'quasar'?

Hi everyone :) , my name's Stacey.

I live in Canberra's Belconnen region. I feel very fortunate as Mr Roo has a fair few caches hidden around where I live (thank you Mr Roo).

I'm still very much a newbie. I have about a dozen finds so far, and 2 that I have looked for but haven't found yet (only because I didn't want to draw too much attention to myself - my story and I'm sticking to it). I'm working on my first multi which is at my workplace, but the weather hasn't been that co-operative lately.

I'm still building my kit - my handbag currently has a crazy assortment of things, including marbles (my swap of choice). I'll upgrade to a backpack soon enough. I started caching using my Garmin Nuvi 310 but soon added an eTrex H to my kit - BCF were kind enough to have a sale on that week ($119).

Anyways, I look forward to getting to know you all better.

Welcome, Stacey! There are quite a lot of us in Canberra, and quite a few in Belconnen.
Looking forward to running into you, out there, somewhere!
