Natalia, I started out that way. I wanted to make sure I was going to enjoy it before buying a GPS. I cached for several weeks with just a printout.

I don't recommend doing micros and nanos this way, especially when you're new.

Have fun!

G'day All,
I am very new to all of this. So new in fact that I don't even have a GPS yet

I learnt about Geocaching in an article in the Melbourne Herald Sun (12 Jan) so I wanted to learn more.

I have a copy of "Geocaching for Dummies" that I am going through at the moment just to learn a bit about it.

So, until I can get myself a GPS I am here to learn more before finding my first cache. :-"

Hi All,

My tag is craigss21. I am a brissy boy (originally NQ). I just discovered this hobby over my xmas break as the app was advertised as a featured app in the app store for the iphone, after some "googling" of this new word (Geocaching), I was hooked and then discovered my first cache the next morning. That was a few weeks ago now and I now have about 17 finds and about 10 DNFs. As I have been on holidays I only got to do a few in Brissy city on the weekend.

Anyway just a quick note to say hi and that I look forward to finding heaps of interesting caches and hiding a few along the way as well.

G'day Bunybear & craigss21 - welcome to the game and hope you get as much enjoyment out of it as we do.

craigss21 - regarding the 10 DNF's - hope it was because the caches were actually missing :)

I wish that were the case, I think it is more due to the fact that I am a noob and still figuring out where exactly are good hiding spots ](*,)

We're a three person team. One of us is brand new to geocaching, the other two have played for a while, but have been out of the game for a while- its a long, crappy story that we hope will end up with someone in jail and us living happily ever after.

We're without transport- hence our lack of finds yet- that and we don't have a good handheld gps. But it looks like we've found (read: roped in) a friend who'll be driver and a temporary team member so we'll be notching up our finds soon enough locally! We're going to try the car gps out for usage as a handheld till we can get ourselves a nice garmin e-trex. Love those!

Might even drop a few caches local- this is my home ground, so I should be able to find some awesome spots that haven't yet been cached!

Looking forward to meeting the locals, and having some fun again!

Hello from the Surfcoast in Vic,

We have been caching just over a year, with 160-odd GC finds, 9 or so GCA finds and 8 or 9 GC hides (no GCA hides as yet). Our team is mainly my son (with occasional honourary cacher hangers on) and I, but sometimes my daughter too. The missus tolerates our hobby and sometimes comes along, but doesn't get it really. She did find the GeGnome project fun though. We've done caches in Aus, Bali and the US. We use an eTrex and the HTC Hero.

Hi everyone - I'm from Adelaide and went caching for the first time yesterday after reading about it on a random blog. :D

I can see why people get hooked on this - my hubby, two stepkids and I had a blast finding two caches yesterday. I do have a feeling that their interest will fade, but I'm keen to continue getting out there by myself.

I'm using the Groundspeak Geocaching app on my Android phone and it seems pretty good so far. I'm still getting my head around all the acronyms and etiquette - I don't want to be one of those annoying noobs who p^&% everyone off!

Hi all,

My name is Jamie and I am 31 years old, I live in Canberra and have decided to give geocaching a go. I am wheelchair bound so my caching will be limited to very basic to start.

I have been using a Garmin Etrex H for the past few years for 4wdring/hunting and camping and have very much enjoyed it for what I have used it for (great little unit).

I have now just bought myself a Garmin Dakota 10 to use for geocaching (I still plan on using my Etrex H as well), and think this gps will do me very well to introduce myself to geocaching.

I love getting out in the bush and have bought myself a little 4wd (Vitara) so I can still access it.

I am looking forward to chatting with other members on here and listening to helpful advice that I know is available from many members of this forum as I have been reading here for a few months now :)

If anyone would now of a few easy cache's around the Canberra region it would be greatly appreciated. I understand that every cache that I venture to I may not get all the way there, but I am more than happy just to give them a go and get as far as I can and if I make it all the way then it would be a great bonus.

Hope to talk to you all soon.

Jamie

Welcome aboard Jamie! I can't help with recommendations for Canberra but at least in theory anything with terrain 1 is wheelchair accessible, and the GC listings also have a wheelchair accessible icon that can be set by the owner.

If you can still go 4WDing and camping (things I both enjoy as well in the Grand Vitara) then you may well not be limited to terrain 1 in any case 8)

Hi I am the Duck part of 'Vasco & his Duck' ( Vasco being a silent partner in crime who searches under another name) despite others saying that it's a bit unfair being called a duck I like it for it is only those that know and understand ducks like the cartoonist and social commentator Leunig that appreciate their superb qualities of being with on a cold night or their strong personalities when it comes to protecting their loved ones. My partner and I come from the Gold Coast and are currently in the midst of being on a full time migration of every state in Australia. We only started Geocaching early this year after muggling some people in the Granite Gorge Nature Park near Mareeba QLD. Thus we figured this this activity would add another dimension to our travels. It now leads to all sorts of places that we would not have discovered otherwise, Being on the move prevents us from placing any caches but we do make a point always cleaning up scruffy caches and try to leave better goodies behind than we take, we are working towards some virtual caches and plan to list them as they evolve. Just love every minute of it.
