Researchers say Sun could blind GPS

What do you think about this?

Sun could blind GPS say researchers
------------------------------------
A BBC technology news report paint a dire picture of failing Global Positioning System (GPS) or satellite-navigation devices as a result of high level solar radiation.

The BBC's Science and Technology Reporter Jason Palmer explains that as the Sun heads towards the peak of Solar Cycle 24 it could generate large and unpredictable sat-nav errors.

Researchers predict that high level radiation from a solar flare can overload GPS or sat-nav receivers so they cannot pick up weak signals from satellites that help establish location.

That situation could occur for tens of minutes, probably a few times a year at the solar maximum.

While the military GPS systems are somewhat protected against this situation through the use of complex directional antennas, other applications of the technology can expect failures.

GPS was initially developed to meet military needs is now an integral infrastructure, finding applications in life-saving emergency service vehicles, all types of transport, mapping, surveying, sport & recreation, surveying, agriculture, fishing, construction and law enforcement, so don't throw away the Melway (street directory) and maintain your map reading skills to avoid being GPS-lost.
