Thinking of a new GPS. $329 for a oregon 300 !

Post by covert » 09 February 10 3:21 pm

*mods* please leave in general forum for a few days to give everyone a chance to get this bargain.

Johnny Appleseed have the Oregon for $329 + $9 shipping. can be picked up in the store. The 300 has been super-seeded with the newer models like the 500 and 550 but is still a steal at this price.

I did a post on Ozbargains with some more details. Anaconda have also adjusted there prices on there system. Display price said $649 but it scanned in at $329 when I tried to get a price guarantee there.

Just saw it on ozbargain and was going to post it here, but guess that wasn't needed!

It's a good deal for an Aussie based GPSr.

If I got one of these, would I be frustrated becasue it wouldn't be able to load stuff I might want? I guess mostly I'm asking about current maps that might not load to it?

Not sure what you want to load on it but if it loads into mapsource I think you will find it will load into the 300 just fine. I put Garmin topo 2.0 on to mine with no problem.

If I wanted to use this for just normal caching round Sydney, what maps would I need to buy? Or could i get everything I really need for free? 'Cause it doesn't come with propper Aussie street maps as far as I can see. That would be extra.

I think you'll need a memory card (they're $10-$15 for a 2GB card)

Go here
http://www.osmaustralia.org/garminroute.php

Download NSW.
Unzip the file to your desktop.

Connect your device.
It should open to the memory card drive.
There should be a folder called Garmin, open it.

Copy the unzipped .img file from your destop.
Paste in into the Garmin folder.

Done.
Seriously, you now have routable maps.
They may not be the best in the country areas, but as they're free and easy, you can't ask for more and over time they should get better.

(I got my 450 today :-))

I've got an SD card for mine - it stores the GPX files, I think, and holds the Australian maps. Steve bought mine for me, so I don't know the details, but I think he paid extra for the maps.

It's a great unit, and is often more accurate than the thing Steve uses, which is GPS software on his iphone.

I have the 500 and would have got the 300 except for a moment of gadget madness and impatience. They are much the same only a few features different. Paperless caching is super, then the car navigation and profiles the maps are clear the unit is accurate.

This is a great unit!!

oh did I mention WhereIgo caching also.

You have already been told about where and how to get maps.

I've got the 200, its great and the maps are very good for when I'm out on my bike. It can also be used in the car for 3D view!
I looked at a lot of units when I wanted to buy and this series really stood out to me!
Whereigo is also on mine.
I am very happy with mine as I paid only $370 for a $650 Gpsr!
That above posted price for the 300 is a great deal!
(wished I'd got that one!)

I have been enjoying my 300 since I got it. Very very happy with it for the price :) I have not found the single axis compass to be a downfall for me, it was my only main concern since it does almost everything else that the 550 does.

I got the 300 today and managed to download the maps and it all WORKS! :D =D> \:D/ :D I can see my house and street and the little "you are here" triangle.

I never thought I'd become so high-tec or manage to download stuff but this was so simple. Thanks heaps C@W for the info and also a huge thanks to a large number of others who gave me hints and info along the way so I sort of understood what I was trying to do. Sort of. But who cares - it WORKS! (insert many amazing fireworks here :D )
