Cache hints
I have had some cachers send me PMs recently requesting some extra clues to some of my hides, after they said that they couldn't find the cache.
My only problem was that they hadn't logged any DNFs on the caches, so I suggested that I would be more than happy to supply some extra clues if they logged a DNF on the cache site.
Was this the right thing to do?

I'd say Yes.Rainbow Spirit wrote:Was this the right thing to do?
Some people seem to really not like posting DNF's, and I've never understood that. A DNF is handy for the owner to know that maybe they do need to change the hint a little.................

Re: Cache hints
I would also suggest to them, that they would need to include the fact that they required help i.e. extra clues, when they finally do make a "found log"

Re: Cache hints
I would say you are correct in requesting a DNF log before giving hints.

Re: Cache hints
Good on you for requesting this. Not sure why some cachers think logging a DNF is shameful.
If you couldn't find it then you couldn't find it, be truthful.

Re: Cache hints
I don't like it when they just write a log instead of a DNF.

Re: Cache hints
To me a DNF means I had a good look for it and couldn't find the thing. A note serves when I couldn't look for it due to muggles or whatever, but still lets the cache owner I was still interested enough to head to GZ.
But yes, if someone didn't find it and wants help by asking for a further hint then ask why they didn't post a dNF if they have been there.

Re: Cache hints
I'll keep that in mind - I've logged DNF's due to Muggles.

Re: Cache hints
Personally, if I head towards a cache, and the general area of GZ is, for example, visible from where I park the car or bike, and I see that its not worth even getting off or out due to muggles, then a DNS (Did not start) write note happens. If I go to GZ, and cant find it, then its a DNF.

Thanks for the clarification on that one, Bundy.

Re: Cache hints
I would say its fair to use your effort not supply extra hints if people are not willing to put in the effort to log a simple DNF. Agreed with all above also, a write note is not good enough to say someone DNF'd.

Re: Cache hints
Handy thread for this newbie. I've logged a few DNF's for caches I went looking for but didn't find because of muggle traffic... won't be doing that again!

Re: Cache hints
I have the same opinion as Bundy. I also will log a DNF if if it is obvious the cache is missing but if I find parts of a cache at the designated GZ I will, most times, contact the owner if I know there contact and replace the container if it is not too far to get back to the geomobile.

Re: Cache hints
Still log it! There is nothing wrong with a DNF. If you write in the log the reason you couldn't find it then it give the owner an indication as to what is going on with the cache.reasonjo wrote:Handy thread for this newbie. When I get a DNF as an owner, I look at a number of things, how long they searched, how tough a hide, how many finds the person has (goes to experience in locating certain hides). All of these things I take into account as to if I need to check the cache.

Re: Cache hints
Oh I'll still log it.. just as a note rather than a DNF. I won't feel lousy about yet another DNF, but the owner will still knowed I at least went to the general vicinity and attempted their cache.
I've had a few DNF's that were simply a case of muggles being around, and added to quite a few other legit DNF's I was getting very frustrated. It's a simple distinction, but it's enough to make me feel better about caching - I was just about ready to give it up for a few weeks.
I haven't hidden any caches yet, but I imagine I'd like to know that people are at least trying to find my caches but get foiled by muggles.
