Cache sounds

Post by PesceVerde » 22 September 09 9:44 am

If a tree falls in a forest and no one (including cachers) is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Depends on if it lands on the cache container or not 8-[

Yes it does, in that the vibrations that make sound audible would still occur. However, it depends on the definition of Sound, as to weather or not someone (or something) needs to be there to 'hear' it for it to be classed as sound.

Does an unfound cache exist before it's discovered?

Or does it exist in a superposed state of being/nonbeing until the FTF comes along and collapsed the wave function into either "Found" or "Muggled"?

Inconclusive - we asked the same question and researched the answer with our cache

Sound is a form of energy. A tree gets energy from the sun in the form of light and heat and converts it through photosynthesis into growth and the ability to stand against the force of gravity. As we all know, energy is neither created nor destroyed. So when a tree falls, it releases kinetic energy that must convert into other forms of energy. A tree doesn't make a sound while it is falling - the only sound it emits is when it hits the ground or other surrounding trees and plants.

So while it is falling, and before it hits the ground or anything else, what form of energy does it release? I believe it is light energy. Hence when a destructive thunderstorm goes thru a forest, those so-called lightning flashes are not lightning at all, but the result of trees falling.

That's my theory and I'm sticking to it :D

Wind is caused by trees moving their branches and hence in turn, moving their leaves. Storms are caused by really BIG trees. Sometimes the trees move so much they overbalance and fall over.

That's my theory and I'm sticking to it :D Just ask my kids...

Trees falling while caching - I have two stories...

1 - My brother and I went walking up a mountain path in Namadgi NP in the ACT to lay a cache, it was a windy day. Cache laid, back we came 20 mins later from when we went through, path was now blocked comprehensively by a massive fallen Eucalyptus tree - and it smelt really eucalyptussy with all the carnage. Did we hear it - NOPE. (we were 1km away on a windy day)

2 - Caching with a couple of other ACT cachers, again in Namadgi, really howling up top at cache site and tops of mountains, while we were walking back along the valleys, CRRRRACK - silence - CRUNCH, BANG, SMASH. DEFINITELY heard that one, didn't see it though, so we can't verify it was a tree

Every so often a random fragrance will bring vivid memories flooding back.
Had to let Big Brother Google jolt the memory bank about this theory.

If then, cachers aren't allowed in the forest and a tree falls on Schrödinger, does the cat make a sound?

If a man says something at a dinner party but his wife doesn't hear it ... is he still wrong :?: :P
