Could somone help me with setting up a garmin H

Post by mickpc » 10 September 09 1:59 pm

I just need to set my degrees minutes seconds, or not set them as the case is.

I am using "mils" with "hdddmm.mm"

Is this correct? I just logged a DNF.

On the main page (same page that has, mark, waypoints, route, tracks), scroll down to setup and press the enter button.
There should be a list of formats to choose from.
Scroll through to the one you want and press the enter button.

Show directional information in degrees or mils.
From the menu page select SETUP > ENTER
Select UNITS > ENTER
Select ANGLE > ENTER
Select DEGREES or MILS > ENTER

You want degrees, not mils.

(Mils are another unit for angle, widely used by the military. There are 6400 or so of them in 360degrees, meaning that 1 mil is about just over 3 minutes of an angle (i.e., a very small fraction of a degree)

(Hope this is the answer you need)

Oh, I thought you needed to change it for a particular cache.
Set it to degrees.
It won't change the ability to find the cache, it simply changes the unit of measurement on the compass directions.

Which cache did you DNF?

oh yes, and use hddd mm.mmm as this is what you'll need for geocaching coordinates (is there any other purpose for a GPS?!)

I think that the deg/mils debate possibly only effects what numbers will show up on the arrow/direction screen (and also any headings or bearings that it displays) ... but I haven't checked this, so could be telling you hugely useless stuff.

I presume you have your map datum set to WGS 84. (Also on the units set up page). If you didn't, change it, but then I think you will need to re-enter your coordinates.

I also presume you are looking for a relatively easy cache and that you are not trying for a difficulty 5 cache with 4 DNFs before yours and plus it's a camouflaged micro (some hides are not meant to be easy to find, hence the value of having difficulty ratings (although I've DNF'd some 1.5s in my time, so low difficulty isn't a guarantee of finding!))

I'd suggest having a look at the google map on the cache page and zoom in a bit to see if the Ground Zero your GPSr was indicating is close to what the Google Map is. You can also type the coordinate into the search bar in Google Earth.
That should at least give you an idea if the problem is with your GPSr set up or not....

Good Luck!
