Where do you get a dot com from?
Hi to all the web gurus.

some advice please , what are some of the "better" domain name suppliers/registers?

After doing a google search, I decided not to look through the 54million results

I am just looking to register a domain name to have a simple mywebsite.com address,
rather than isp_provider.com/username etc and have the name come up in google searches etc

any advice appreciated

I have half a dozen. Ignore all their "add ons". Cheap and easy. Never had a problem. Talks in short sentences.

There are some companies that only offer domain registration, others that only offer hosting, and others that do both.
There are a few SA cachers (including me) that use Host Monster and are happy with it.
I've never had an issue with them, and can only remember about 1 day of issues in the last couple of years, and even then it was only a minor mail flow delay. It's cheap, there is plenty of storage, unlimited mail accounts, plenty of tools, unlimited ftp, shell access, etc. Plus if you sign up with them and haven't already got a domain name registered, you get that thrown in for free.
The only thing to check with a lot of the overseas registrars/hosts is if you want a .com.au or .id.au address then you will need to register with an australian registrar for the domain, and then an american hosting company for the hosting side of things.
Unless your happy to pay more than you need to, you should be looking at hosting in America, as bandwidth is far far cheaper over there, hence the much lower costs than hosting here.

Hmm this thread has got me thinking.
My host monster account is due for renewal in a couple of months and they want ~$9US p/m for me to continue on, but a quick check of godaddy and it looks like with the discount that Darren mentioned I could get as low as $5.34US a month
$192US for 36 months hosting does seem pretty good in comparison to $324US

Re: Where do you get a dot com from?
It appears as though the above mentioned codes have expired, but after a quick bit of googling I came across this site, which shows that up until the end of the month you can get 25% off your purchase by using the discount code of BTPS255.
Before I do sign up for it I guess I should just check that people are still happy with the Godaddy service
At this stage I'll be getting 2 years hosting, plus a second domain name for under $140AU

I'm now hosting a forum on my hosting account (thankfully less busy than this one!) and it's holding up fine and the management tools made it very easy.
