Elaboration may be required to fully appreciate the circumstances surrounding the incident that has been tantalisingly proffered for our consideration.

ie - What the heck happened?

Well, of course the Squalids originally come from the Land of No Snakes, so we're a mixture of fascinated and terrified when in contact with these hissy things.
Coming through NSW we decided to do a cache at old rail bridge. Squalid husband, oblivious of all but the bridge, strided through the long but sparsely growing grass on the way over to it. Squalid wife, trod carefully, looking, looking, oblivious to the bridge, but not expecting to see anything else. All of a sudden a rushing, rustling streak of black raced across between the two, causing Squalid wife to throw arms in air, screach in a blood curdling way and run in the opposite direction. Away from husband and snake, to the safety of the footpath. Squalid husband was left in the middle of a stand of grass, bemused. Squalid wife headed back to the car, tossing over her shoulder briefly 'There's a snake....'. Squalid husband looked around, then with a great show of stomping proceeded to find and log the cache. Still not having seen a snake in the wild. On the way back to the car, a tail was poking out of the long grass, resting itself on the footpath. Squalid wife now remembered snake training and stopped, and was very quiet not screeching once. The snake moved away into the thicker grass without a word.
