Souvenir coins from Machines

Post by wombles » 24 April 09 6:19 pm

In my travels I have picked up a couple of these coins.
One from the Monorail in Sydney and 3 from New Zealand.

Does anyone know if there is a website to find locations of these machines?
On the back they have either "Australia souvenir tourist coin" or "New Zealand Tourist dollar" or "New Zealand Souvenir Coin".

I know of the squashed penny site, I'm collecting them too, not that their site is much use as it only lists some machines, I found some in Christchurch that aren't listed on their site.

I think there may be a waymarking category for these coins, that may help.

Have a look here at this old locationless cache listing. May be of interest?

When my kids see these machines they bug me to use it.

Ones I know of are at Movieworld, Sea World and there is one at Mt Cootha.

There is a penny squashing machine at the souvenir shop area at the very top of the Centrepoint Tower in Sydney. The cost is $ 1.00 .

As stated ,they are usually placed in popular tourist hotspots and mostly within a souvenir shop sometimes placed prominently at the door and other times hidden away.

Thanks for the replies. The ones you guys have mentioned are all the smashed penny ones rather then the gold coins, but Im going to make a list of them anyway.
I'll check out that cache and waymarking?

Try the Canberra Mint, you can press your own dollar coin with the Canberra Mint mark for a couple of bucks.

Yeah we have done that one. Pay $2 for a $1 coin. :D

I think the war memorial may also have had something similar.

Picked up the Canberra mint coin from the $2 machine in one of the galleries a few weeks ago.It states on the front cover of the 2 page booklet you get supplied with it..." 100 Years of Australia's Original Coat of Arms".
Specifications...Metal Al/Br...Mass...9.00g.....Diameter....25.00mm.

The original Coat of Arms continued to be used on various coins prior to decimalisation such as the Sixpence and the One Florin.
2008 One dollar uncirculated Coin."C" Canberra Mintmark.

Gundagai isnt a squashed penny either. Its a gold coloured coin/token with the dog on the tuckerbox on it.

There is also one in the souvenir shop at the Jenolan Caves. Not a squashed penny but a real souvenir coin.
