Garmin Mapping

Post by SteelRat » 01 July 04 2:31 pm

Quick question: is anyone aware of any Australian topo mapping products that can be loaded onto Garmin units? So far the only Australian product Garmin has is the City Navigator, which doesn't give any bush bashing detail.

How "topo" map are we talking?

The Metroguide from garmin has a fair bit of info on it.

I have been out on some fairly "back" roads (Eg: Dirt Tracks) and had them showing on the garmin maps.
Good enough by my views.

The metroguide is a good product. It's detail for roads and tracks is excellent. In many country areas it even includes driveways. When going across the Nullarbor (Off road not the highway) it included almost every dodgy little track we came across.

I didn't even think of Metroguide! Does it allow the auto-route function?

I wish I had your version of metroguide , mine doesn't give any driveways and also I found the further you go off the road the less road you get, I mainly use raster maps when i'm bush. My metrogude is version 4 . But just last weekend when i was in perth I found City navigator Version 5 was auto routing me into the scrub, I mean it navigated me on 4wd tracks. But it won't do that in SA

Thanks all. I wasn't necessarily looking for something with contour lines, just bushtracks at least. Looks like ACN might have that level of detail along with autoroute.

Don't expect bush tracks on City Navigator....unless they are in Sydney!
City Navigator only has capital cities and significant country towns plus main connecting roads. By significant I mean cities like Bathurst, Toowoomba, Kalgoorlie, Port Augusta etc.
