Oldest Australian geocaches

Post by The Spindoctors » 24 March 09 9:56 pm

Each week I log into my account and see numerous geocachers pass me by. While it's not about THE numbers, there are many others that I aim for. One is completing the Well Rounded Cacher.

Another is completing this list.

Have you found the complete set? I have 4/8 so far.

Managed Lane Cove in NSW as the oldest, and the oldest existing in SA. Haven't chased the others. Both fun, even if the NSW one is now a virtual.

Could be a goal though for future interstate trips, hadn't thought about it before. Thanks for posting the list.

That's an interesting list. We've managed five of them, but no prospect of increasing that number any time soon.

Happily found 2 so far but ran out fo time to get to QLD's 1st. One of our caches that we adopted http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_de ... 506ee443ec Devil Bend was offline and had many DNF's. At that stage we were new to geocaching and didnt realise it was offline, we went in search and found the 10 litre bucket full of water and a log book that was wet and mouldy in a plastic bag. The cache had been covered in leaf litter and we found it by sheer luck. After a few emails the old owner had moved interstate and was happy to adopt it out. It was then we learned it was Victoria's second cache. It is a pity to see some of the other significant caches have been archived and being unaware of the circumstances it would be great to see them be unarchived.

I posted a log on the cache page, but does anyone know the status of "Melbournes First" cache?

Given it's in the BroadfordFlowerdale rd area, and I know that area was mentioned frequently when the fires were raging, has anyone been able to find out if it is still in existance?

Would be another sad aspect of the fires if it's gone...

Posted a note on the Cache page, and got a reply saying the the Cache *is* still there and wasn't effected by the fires, but the area nearby was.

Good luck!

We hope to get out that way soon, but will probably wait til some of our friends start rebuilding and tie it in to a visit.

Visited Victoria's oldest cache today
"Melbourne's 1st"

Cache in good condition, unaffected by fires.

Have found 4 of Australia's oldest, need more annual leave :D

That's a very interesting list to ponder....but I've done none of them! I can understand the lure in finding them though. When I was in Ireland a couple of years ago, I got the chance to do one, "Europe's First" (couldn't figure how to do the hyperlink), and I found that quite a thrill!

I've done the one in Tassie. Not sure when I'll make it to any of the others though.

I have managed to do 6 of them and had a DNF (there were two of us searching) on one other. Must get back there!

Thanks for the list.

I've found 2 of them - ACT and Vic - I get up to Sydney quite a bit these days so should have a go at Lane Cove sometime.
