GPS not reading waypoints accuratly

Post by MyWest » 15 March 09 7:30 pm

I am new to this and looked for 3 caches on sunday 15 March,
found 1 out of three.
At 2 cashes the GPS read the Waypoint 200 to 100 meters in to houses away from cache site.
At the cache I found the gps read the waypoint to be 210 meters north of actual cache location (was standing beside it).
Is there a way to recalibtae a GOE have a Garmin etrex (yellow basic model). This is the second one I have had and I remember the last one was accurate to about 10 meters?

You need to go in to the GPS settings and set the Datum to WGS84, and then delete all your waypoints and re-enter them.(It will adjust your existing waypoints and they will still be 200m out!)

It's a common mistake for new players!

Iwill give that a go but the GPS was already on WSG84 when I started but a "microsoft" reboot cannot hurt.

A long shot, but I assume that these are Traditional type caches you're looking for?

If they're puzzle types (with a question mark icon), the listed coords aren't where the cache is!

I own one of the cache they have been looking for and it is a simple Trad ammo can in a park. I can meet with the OP if they like and check out what is going wrong. I have sent them an email.

Sounds like the mistake I made on my first cache! - However, with me, it was the fact that OziExplorer was set to the wrong datum! (GPS was fine, but downloading software was wrong - net result - 200m out!).
