I take it a lot of us may have lost a lot of caches in the firestorm and, as "users" of the bush, is there any thing we can do as the "Geocaching Community" to give aid to those less fortunate than ourselves.

Just a thought.

The one that immediately springs to mind is to make a monetary donation (as many geocachers will have already). One possible avenue is the Victoria Bushfire Appeal that is being coordinated by the Red Cross. You can make an online donation by visiting their site http://www.redcross.org.au or by phoning 1800 811 700. Other suggestions for assistance are made on the Red Cross website (including reasons why they would prefer people not to donate goods).

djcache put into words the sentiments of many others in his post on the Vic Bushfires thread:

The challenge to all now is to toe the line and help with recovery in the years to come.

I hope that in the future, we can still remember the pain and sorrow that we have felt for those affected, and feel as compelled to act as we do now.

In addition to cash donations now and signing up to be contacted re blood donations, maybe at a time in the future, when things are a little more settled, there could be an event working bee or similar, to do some of the manual work of restoring a park or picnic area. Just a thought.

This sounds like a great idea and if enough notice is given, i'm sure a lot of interstate cachers would be happy to come help too.

Donations made through the Myer Bushfire Fund are being matched dollar for dollar by Myer, so if you wish to have your donation doubled call the Myer Customer Service Centre on 1800 811 611

Coles are also donating all profits from this Fridays turnover to the bushfire fund.

So basically go and do your groceries on Friday!

I found the Redcross website snowed under today and couldn't donate. But if you visit your local KMart you can donate there. You can just rock up to a register and donate as much or as little as you like. So instead of my Coffee today, I made a donation.

As much as the human factor of these fires is such a tragedy and I will certainly make a donation, give a thought to the animals as well, who perished or have severe injuries, whether they are wild or domestic.
I have just read that the RSPCA Victoria have a team of vets/ staff and volunteers on the frontline caring for the animals affected.
I have just made a donation and you can too. They guarantee that 100% of donations for the animal bushfire victims will go toward veterinary care etc .

Our rabbit just made a donation to the RSPCA appeal - they are going to send him a tax deductible receipt . . .

The Virgin flight I caught from Brisbane to Sydney tonight was collecting as well, they raised $612 which will be matched by Virgin for the appeal.

What she said. Us Victorian Cachers need to think about this in 3-24 months

Gave blood today - first time in 2 years. Will certainly donate money in the next few days.

Morning tea organised at work tomorrow to collect donations for the appeal.

Even in a medium size workplace this can pull a couple of hundred dollars.
