Trimble Geocache Navigator - Now free for Nokia phones

Post by Damo. » 15 February 08 11:30 pm

Noticed this in the weekly email from Groundspeak.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I. Geocache Navigator now available for free on select Nokia phones
--------------------------------------------------------------------

A free ad-supported version of the popular Trimble Geocache Navigator application is now available for Nokia N95, Nokia N82 and Nokia 6110 Navigator phones.

Geocache Navigator is the first fully featured geocaching application for the mobile phone. It turns a GPS-enabled phone into a single geocaching tool that is linked directly to Geocaching.com's cache listings and provides you with real-time access to caches near your location. This allows you to enjoy geocaching without having to use a standalone GPS unit, cables or cache data printouts.

If you have a Nokia N95, N82 or 6110 Navigator phone on a network allowing you to use the phone's built-in GPS, you can get a free download at http://www.GeocacheNavigator.com/nokia Alternatively, text CACHE to 32075 (US & Canada) / +44-77-8148-8133 (other countries), or visit m.getgn.com from your phone for the free download.

View the video showing geocaching with Geocache Navigator on a Nokia N95 phone at http://www.GeocacheNavigator.com/video

I have a 6110 Navigator and downloaded and installed with no problems. Seems like the perfect program for some one who doesn't want to mess around with gpx downloads and do ad-hoc caching without prior planning.

Useless of course for caching in areas without mobile phone coverage and you might want to watch your data limits too.

I tried it and it works OK, but I don't think the GPS reception is the greatest on my 6110. But the integrated web browser is pretty good and can see myself using it to find caches close by. I will try it again today to see how it goes.

Tried Trimble's Geocaching Navigator out on my N95 during a cache run last night, and it's pretty much the program I've been looking for! :D Worked beautifully, switches effortlessly between displaying the cache information and pointing the way. All it needs is the ability to use GPX files rather than downloading the details on the fly, or the ability to save the downloaded information when the program is closed. Otherwise, very happy with it, previously I was using http://mobile.geocaching.com.au and punching the coords into my etrex, as there was no Cache Management program that would give directions to the cache, and there wasn't a decent 'magic arrow' program available.
As for data use, I was using Geocaching Navigator freely over the course of looking for 9 caches, as well as having 3dtracking running so my travels could be watched in Google Earth from home :D and Sportstracker logging the whole trip (with GPS-A), and over the course of about 8 hours used only 930kb of data.
The GPS performance is HUGELY improved by using GPS-A, I certainly recommend getting a data allowance even if you don't use it for anything else.
And having 3dtracking running means my anti-geocaching partner can see where I've gotten to, and she enjoys it!

Hey zactyl, do you use it with or without the background maps?

I would have to say on first try it seems pretty good. The arrow will definitely help as i used to use Vito Navigator 11 on a Jas Jam phone and found the pointing arrow was great for the last 50 metres to a cache GZ. I am a wondering what sort of bandwidth the program will use and I will do an experiment tomorrow (work permitting).

So far on the good side: It seems very easy to navigate around and the cache notes are clear and easy to read. I do like the option to view the hint if needed as sometimes you want to find it Gaff1.
The trail screen is straight forward and I did like the street directory overlay which I tried, however I could not get Topo or Ariel to function and Ariel map came up as an error.
Selecting a list of caches was easy and there was a choice of how many, how far, found and not found which would be handy when one was out without the GPS or wanting to see if there was any new caches nearby. I was however unable to select hide found caches but that maybe something I need to adjust in settings.
One other feature I did like was being able to enter coordinates manually and being able to enter D, DM, DMS, degrees minutes seconds and letting the program convert these makes it easier to use.

All in all a good program that I may just need now and then to help find a cache without the GPS at hand.
my score at this stage 8/10 on first impressions, now to take it out in the field for a full test.

Can't get it to work...

Post by delboy1203 » 08 March 08 9:48 pm

I downloaded the software onto my 6110, but can't seem to get it to work.
Downloads and installs fine. When I open it, it asks for my phone number and pin. What format do you enter the number in? +61... or just 04? The pin number, is it any pin number?
It then says "Initializing" for about 2 minutes before resulting in an error message "failed to connect to server. Please try again. SymbianOS error = -33 : General: Operation TimeOut"
Any help welcome.

I'm on Optus

I had no trouble getting it to install and from memory I selected its default listing of available networks. I think this was Telstra Internet MMS, but it did ask for mobile number and my internet password for telstra which was fine.

No onto the program: I had a good chance to use the geocache navigator on a cache GC19VE9 Theodores bushland and got a FTF as an added bonus.
I fired up the Navigator the same time as the Explorist and by the time i had started to enter the coordinates into the explorist the Navigator had listed 3 Quick caches in the area.
With this I decided to go with the Navigator and started for the cache. The program worked well and the arrow was excellent in pointing the way. A quick flick of the screens showed 50 metres to go and i was happy with the way it was guiding me.
My phone and Navigator led me straight to the cache and the cache was found easily, and whilst i was filling in the log book I noticed it was showing zero metres from the cache GZ whilst the phone was whre the cache container was.
At this stage I was impressed with the program and I forgot to mention I checked its location earlier in the day with its mapping feature and I was able to ascertain its general location (closest intersection)which was entered into Tom Tom.
After returning to the Truck I decided I needed to see how much internet usage I had tallied up and jumped onto my data usage meter.
I was surprised to see the whole cache experience had totaled up 49 kilobytes of data usage, and i had this confirmed by Telstra. over the course of the day I gathered 4 more part clues to some multi caches and had the program running most of the time in between jobs. Total usage for the day 225 kilobytes.

One thing i did notice using this program and phone for caching was that I did not feel out of place and perhaps look out of place walking along looking at my phone screen, and I suppose one could be pretending to talk on it for added stealth.

Although it wont replace the GPS it is handy to have and can be used as another way to check for new cache in the area, or to find a cache if you dont have the GPS with you, and it certainly will help you get to GZ.

All in all a great program which I would recommend and I give it a 9.5 out of 10 (.5 off for not being free to use).

I did take some screen shots which I would like to add if anyone can tell me the best way to upload them to this log or site as i would like to add further reviews with pics.

The first screen Compass: The first thing I noticed on this screen was a nice big arrow that pointed the way and was very responsive to movement. This screen also offered a few GPS extras of Distance to GZ, speed, bearing and altitude. I was comfortable with this screen when getting close to the cache.

The Radar Screen : A basic screen that offered distance rings and as I got closer to the cache the triangle moved towards the centre. You will notice the icons on the top right hand side which are your page-screen options. I did like to distance to the cache metering at the top.

It's usually a "special character" causing that, are you trying to use a degrees symbol (kinda funny that we can't use the symbol when posting coordinates!) or the curly quotes? They seem to be the main culprits.

And you might find this program handy!
