Not so in the 70 series. The spring is only at one end.
I do check where the + and - are though. Everytime.

My Garmin etrex Legend Cx has flat connectors at both ends - no problem for me.

etrex legend only has 1 spring
, the other 3 points are all flat

While we're talking batteries, anyone have suggestions on how to clean out battery leakage from being in there to long?

........apart from doing more caching so they go flat before they can leak

Its not just GPSrs some other things do it too. As specialy where one inserts batterys down a hole end on.
As for cleaning battery holders: If you can remove said holder from the device soap and hot water works OK. When replaced coat terminals with vasaline.
I had a battery explode
due to heat in my etrex and I was able to remove all terminals block that hole and wash out the holder.

This must be the punishment that Garmin metes out to those who don't buy the high end models.
Nope. Pennance for not getting a Magellan.

Garmin users are smarter and know how to put batteries in without needing terminal conventions.

Our Magellan SporTrak Map has the same "problem". One battery goes the "right" way (spring on the negative), one goes the "wrong" way (spring on the positive). The only device I've ever seen to do that.
