Mapping software for eTrex in car in Melbourne?

Post by GrahamC » 30 March 07 4:47 pm

I'd like to use my eTrex Legend in the car also for driving from A-B (not GCing - work related navigation) - any recommendations on the best street mapping software for Melbourne?

City Navigator 7.0

Free options include shonky maps and tracks 4 australia.

These are mainly for country areas , not much chop for city areas.

Metroguide, City Nav or run Tom Tom if you got PDA cabled to your GPS

is this the 8meg legend? if so, you won't fit a major metropolitan city map into 8meg, so, check that first.

Yes it would be best to check. I have a blue legend and can't find anyway for it to auto-route for you. It just wouldn't have enough memory to load a decent sized map either.

I ended up going with a cheaper TOMTOM which I use for navgating in cities and grab the legend when I get out of the car. I think the cheapest TOMTOM will be cheaper than the software from Garmin and (IMO) works better.

Just read this thread.

The blue etrex legend will not auto-route, full stop.

I know because we had one. You only get 8meg of memory so at best you can load Tracks4Australia and you will be able to see what main roads you are on.

You may be able to connect it to a laptop with a serial port and auto route off the laptop using City navigator 7.0. You need to get the later colour etrex or 60cx for auto routing.

We used Tom Tom in a pda for the on road and the etrex for the off road / walking.
