Post by Bronze » 10 March 07 8:26 pm

How fast is your connection?

http://www.speedtest.net/

According to Speedtest.net that averages for Australia are:
Download = 4748kb/s
Upload = 507kb/s

Please also describe your set up / plan.

I'm running two computers through Optusnet 1.5mb/s plan here in Dubbo.
I used the Sydney exchange for the test.

XP Home computer - 1063 download and 170 upload
Linux Laptop wireless - 799 download and 151 upload.

Interesting how it is able to determine your nearest point, seems to do a reverse trace route to you to figure it out.
Though according to it the distance i travel to my nearest point is 650miles. Interesting to see that i get better results by going to melbourne, rather than adelaide, or even sydney.

I'm on ADSL2+ - Annex A - with internode. Will keep testing and see if i can get any higher.

ADSL 2+

I can actually confirm that it is faster than this, but only if you are doing multiple downloads at once.

It's interesting follow the trace.

I can't really say. Mine said 50mi as well and yet I'm 6 hours drive away from Sydney.

I tried a couple of speed test and the optus Speed test was the worst. In fact when I called Optus about this they told me to disregard the speet test on their site and got me to download a picture and ask me what the download speed was.

We have recently changed from 512 to 1.5. If it don't get any better soon for the money we are paying we can go with the Westnet 8mb plan but with a download limit.

Now were running Engin for our phone. I'm also looking at Dodo because they are now offering a free line rental and really thats all we are paying now.

Using Sydney I get 4868 and 244.

You should be much higher. My son uses iinet on an adsl2 connection and gets approx 15000 upload. I can't remember his other figure.

I think they have adopted the smallest distance as 50 mile. If you use a Sydney or Adelaide server the distance is about right for straight line distances.

Well, Mine seems to be 4176 kb/s for downloads and 123 kb/s for uploads and I'm in Brisbane accessing the Sydney server. And I'm using an XP computer through a cable to the laptop downstairs and then out thru a cable modem and cable to Bigpond. Is this reading good or what??

XP laptop via wireless LAN to Bigpond Cable.

Interestingly, I get similar results on the XP Desktop (hardwired to the router) if the test is run using IE but get shocking results if I use Firefox, 140+ ms latency, 600kb/s download :? Makes me wonder about the validity (or my PC?)
