Post by TeamJEKL » 08 January 07 11:57 am

I am looking at 2 GPS models. Garmin Etrex Legend ($289) and the Magellan Explorist 210 ($358). from what i can see they are pretty much the same specs, but the garmin is a lot cheaper. anyone have any thoughts? anyone looking at upgrading theirs or have done for Christmas and looking to offload there old one? :D

Mmmmm, I compared the two last year when I was in the market for a new one......went for the 210 (can't exactly remember why now, but it must have been a good reason

The 210's inability to able to enter a waypoint directly into it and then go to it?

Isn't that hard in an Explorist, we use to do multi-caches, and is relatively painless...

I went with the 210, mainly due to the 22MB set aside for personal data, along with another 8MB for the basemap.

Have a nicely detailed Vic Map on mine, love it.

Make sure to get the latest firmware update if you go for the Explorist, as it makes it a lot quicker unit

How good are the extra base maps? does it display minor roads, tracks, river paths etc? that might be the clincher actually... i had miss read the specs

Aaaaaaaah, the more detailed maps cost, that is the problem, but they show plenty of detail, lots of minor roads and tracks. Rivers, railways, etc.

I am sure if I got some of the latest maps, then I would see all the bush tracks that are there. Some of that is dependant on the program you use as to what detail is shown.

It generally leads us close to the bush caches, not sure how I would go with the standard basemap.

As I have said to others, go with whichever one you feel the most comfortable with. Some people love Magellan, others love Garmin. Personally I love this Magellan, but if someone offered a Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx or 76CSx I wouldn't turn it away :)

There is a set of *free* maps available from certain geocachers for the Legend based on Geosciences Australia 1:250k map series. They are much better than any other map series from Garmin, including the purchased ones due to their coverage outside of metro. They cover anything you can get a vehicle down. Sure Garmin do better maps for the city but who really needs a map for the city?

Any chance of a copy of the shonky maps being at the event this week?

I'll throw a beer at the carrier and the manufacturer.

GPSOZ have kindly made available the free version of tracks4australia at http://www.gpsoz.com.au/tracks4australia/ . It is worth noting that it does not include routing information (for models that support that kind of thing).
