PDA- Flashdrive interface.

Post by Bundyrumandcoke » 03 January 07 12:27 pm

Be gently.

I am contemplating buying a PDA for caching. Its a tad smaller and easier handled than the laptop I have sometimes previously used, especially when on the bike on an upcoming trip.
I am specifially after a PDA with USB interface, as I have no Bluetooth capability. It doesnt have to be new, good second hand would do. Budget does come into consideration. Any suggestions on a suitable model.

And then an idea, looking round, it seems a lot of PDA's use SD cards for expanding memory. Would it be possible to use the 2 gig flashdrive that I bought to expand the memory of the laptop via the USB interface cable to expand the memory of a PDA.

Cheers
David

The PDA would need to have a USB Host Device in it (not many do)

I dont know if you can get anything for PDA's that will allow flash drive connections, I know a few people here at work have tried to find stuff, but have failed to find a viable solution

With the cost of 2 (and bigger) SD/flash MMD cards nowadays, just buy one to suit your PDA.

I have bought mini SD for our Jamins, 2 gig for about 80 bucks.

I can get a Ipaq rx4240 locally for just under $350. How does the specs for this compare to the 1950?

I have been using a 1950 and very happy with it set up in landscape mode. It has USB connect but not Bluetooth.

Your'e probably looking at the 4240 on special at Dick Smith. Have a look at both of them there for the same price there.

The specs for the 4240 look better, but I can't see any buttons on it. I have my buttons set up so that I don't need the stylus to check cache notes in the field, which is handy.

PS Depending on who you get in the shop, they probably don't know anything that isn't written on the box. I was told it came with a PDF viewer, but it didn't. PDF is a free download off the net.

Bluetooth is a really useful thing to have, in case you ever get a BT GPSr (as well as connection to your mobile for Internet access on occasion, etc.)

A nifty gadget to go with it is the SD cards that fold in half to plug straight into a USB port.

I haven't seen a PDA with a USB host port for your memory stick.

Check out Tungsten T(whatever) or TX PDAs on eBay.

We had the same sort of thing with the laptop in the car during the 24 hr run. A couple of inches sticking in the rear could easily get caught. So we used one of those short USB extension cords, only about 30cm long, but more flexible than a flash drive.

That's the one. I love it because it fits in my Palm's hardcase, so I always have it with me. A USB flashdrive was just something else to carry, as was a card reader for the standard SD cards.
