Walk-out value?

Post by Papa Bear_Left » 28 August 06 2:08 pm

A topic that was explored in a Palm forum a while ago:

What are you worth in terms of stuff carried on a regular basis?

On a typical caching hike, I'd carry:

GPSr (Magellan MeriGreen): $200?
PDA (Palm T3): $300
Phone (Moto V360): $100
Video iPod (free to me but worth): $450
Swiss Army Knife with USB memory: $120
Camera (3MP no-name): $100
ScotteVest (19 pockets!): $150
Hiking pole: $50
GPRs (Holux Bluetooth GR-360): $180
Two-way radios: $120
1st aid, swaps, compass, torches, etc.: $100?

My geeky old Casio DBX-102 watch no longer counts, although it cost me $100 of Berocca a few years ago. (Long story)

I've seen some of the posts here that suggest I'm on the low side of the median, even though I'm sure there's a few people who head out with nothing more than a yellow etrex and jeans and t-shirt!

Etrex legend $297

:)

My camera is worth $1000 but is not suitable for rough terrain or wet weather.

If you check out what a Spyderco Mouse is you might not want to take on Rhinogeo :D

Camera that i got for my birthday - free!
Keys (car's not really worth anything) Wallet (never has money in it anyway) Phone ??
Occasionally a PDA a guy from dads work gave me - Free!!

Adam on the other hand -
In car computer with touch screen - $1200
Garmin 12 - cost a fortune back in the day but now $100?
      Bluetooth gps - $150
other random bits of technology - $200

It seems some just take the etrex

Think the most I'v taken at once was:

Snow shoes $100 value - made them
      Gaiters $50
      Tent $300ish
Macpac $450 back in those days
      Strove $120
      Boots $400 ish
      Compass $30
      Sleeping bag $600
      Radio $600
      Torch $70
Food, sundry attire, odds and sods etc $100
      GPSx2 $360

      FTF on a 2 year old cache 8) 8)

Chose not to take the PDA as it wasn't waterproof and not worth it for one cache.
