Screen Resolution

Post by ClydeE » 13 October 03 2:00 am

Hi Guys,

This is a general poll for everybody. I just want to get an idea what screen resolution people are mainly using these days. I am having trouble fitting everything I want to in 800 x 600 resolution for the offline view in my geo2ozi program.

This should help me determine if I can drop support for this resolution, but I would also think the information could be handy for other software developers.

I use 1600x1200 on a 19" monitor and 1400x1050 on my 15" laptop screen. Many people still use 800x600 though for various valid reasons (and some silly ones like they don't know how to change it).

Looking at geo2ozi, perhaps you could:

1) Split the functionality onto 2 or more tabs; or
2) Have an "Advanced..." button that brings up the advanced options; or
3) Have a wizard type interface where some options are chosen, press Next ->, then select more options.

- Rog

Yes, I am rapidly coming to the conclusion this is the type of path I will need to go down

Thanks for the feedback Mind Socket.

Screen resolution

I'm usually on 1024x768 on my 15" laptop screen ... 800x600 is a little too chunky for my liking.

I use at least 1280 x 1024 on my 17 in screen at work and sometimes up to 1600 x 1200 on the 19 in at home. Anything less it gets way too clunky and you can't fit enough information on the screen for my liking - maybe that's way my eyesight gets worse after a long time at the computer...???

Being of more mature years I can say that anything more than 800*600 is very tiring on the eyes.
Keep in mind the older generation.
Kevin.

Whilst I use 1024x768 for everything, there would be a lot of people out there with older machines or small monitors (14" and 15") that it isn't really practical to run anything above 800x600 without ruining your eyesight with crappy refresh rates and blury pixels.

If you want to get an accurate idea of what people use, install a good statistics counter on your web page, it will be able to tell you what screen res people use.

Even some of the 'not so mature' people use 800 x 600. I'm in my ealry 30's and have myopia. With contacts I find reading the computer a chore. Therefore I use this setting.

My understanding is that according to web stats 800 x 600 has just dropped below 50%. There maybe a while to wait yet before you drop us from the list.

I use 1280 x 1024 on a 19" monitor both at home and at work. Anything less is too clunky for me. The software I use at work (AutoCAD) is icon driven & therefore I need to use a higher resolution to get all the common commands on the screen...

I use 1600 x 1200 on a 21"monitor and 1024 x 768 on a 17" on my main computer (I like a dual monitor setup) and 1024 x 768 on a 17" and 800 x 600 on a 15" on a second computer. My laptop runs 1024 x 768 on a 15" screen.
With the commercial customers we maintain, the 15" screens are usually set at 800 x 600, the 17" ones at 1024 x 768.

Oh yeah? Well, I use 65,535 x 65,535 pixels on a 70 FOOT screen and my mouse has a petrol engine and I drive it by remote control!

Scene 1: Two kiwi tourists are standing on Bondi Beach. It's early morning and they are looking out to sea, hands sheilding their eyes from the glow on the horizon.

Kiwi 1: "Geez the sunrises are beautiful here, ay bro?"

Kiwi 2: "That's no sunrise Bro, That's Bear_Lefts monitor ay!!"
