Can any one recomend a/some computer forum(s)?

Preferably ones that arn't going to spam you etc etc.

Or should I ask here (it's nongeocaching related)?

Whirlpool is a great site to keep up with all the Broadband news affecting Australia.

I must say, I have never seen their front page without some news about someone sueing or class actioning Telstra.

Telstra is very evil.

/me *hugs* his Telstra Bigpond Cable modem, "May we never fight again" :)

What aspect of computers (software, hardware, ethics, innovation, the law, new technology, linux, evil operating systems, hacking, cracking, networking, funky web sites, tech support, programming, jobs)? Do you want to discuss, or just learn?

Win98se internet connection shareing.
How do we disable auto disconnect on the machine with the modem (yes dialup  ) or make it not disconnect for an extended period (>1hr), even when the connection is astablished by one of the host machines.
It would seem this is not the norm due to timed local calls overseas etc.
Time loged on to isp / phone time is NO issue but lots of calls are.

Moderators advice please? Is this appropriate? If not please Delete the blue bit.

It's not overtly offtopic, so it can stay (for all we know, the problem might be preventing you from logging finds :) ). I'm not sure who'll be able to help though :)

Are you sure the machine with the modem is the one disconnecting?

My advice would be to get a spare PC, my dialup router is a P75!, and install a Linux router distribution (eg.FreeSCO) and use that for the dialup. It will give you a more stable local network and a tad more security for next to nothing. A single "floppy based" distro would be all that you need, and the better distributions are not too hard to configure and maintain (Having said that make sure you have a quick browse through the Fine Manual).

I am sure that there are members on this forum who can assist you 'off channel' to get the thing configured cleanly. Chasing down Win9x IP-sharing LAN problems makes you go grey very early :(

cheers Darren :)

Win98se dialup - its been years but there is some nagging memory about a setting in the dial up networking configuration that you can set to stop auto disconnect.

You have to start somewhere, I taught myself everything I know and no one in my family has a clue about anything computer related.

Majority of those bootable floppy OS's are easy to use since they are mostly preconfigured.

Most of the linux things are designed for people just like you. I've not seen this version, but I have seen one called IPCop (more of a firewall than a conection sharer), but built to be user friendly. Once installed (insert CD, boot computer, answer few simple questions), maintenance is via a web broweser.

Go one, be a devil and jump in - can't be any worse than you have now 8)

For many years before going to my all in one DG834G, I used a spare PC and free proggy called SmoothWall (Linux based from memory). Turns those old P100's that always seem to be lying around in to a dial-up router firewall.

not sure about the Internet Sharing part, and I haven't got 98SE, but try having a look in your Internet Properties - something that follows something like this...

Control Panel--> Internet Options --> Connections Tab --> Settings --> Advanced

Make sure the 2 Disconnect options are unchecked...

Can't think of anything else... It's been a while since i've used dial-up... (not meaning to rub salt into the wound or anything... )
