Cheap GPSr's

Post by The Garner Family » 01 December 04 11:05 pm

Got a catalog today for Super Cheap Auto, who have advertised:

"Hand Held GPS: Memory storage for up to 3840 marks, 20 routes, 31084 route points and 156 waypoints per route". It's a real GPS (not just a mouse) and it's $149!!!

Is this the cheapest new GPSr around or can you get any cheaper?

You can get a new Yellow eTrex for less than that on eBay - delivered.

I got my new ForeTrex 101 for just over $150 on eBay, a bit extra for delivery from the states of course.

Even the Amazom.com price for an eTex in the states is $85US.

I've heard that the Super Cheap GPS is pretty crap. I think there was a thred on it some time ago.

Until you drop it, smash it against a rock, or put tree branch through the screen

But that's no different to the risk you run with any GPSr ... probably a cheaper combination than spending big $$$ on a colour model!

It has no serial port and it will be a pain to load every cache in by hand :(

I cant beleive I am not recommending a Magellan!!!
What a sad day....

I dont see a use for a color model unless you really require it for road mapping. Even then a greyscale does a prity good job. Color is a luxury.

Hey, I just checked out the QLD Super Cheap Auto Catalog online. I can't see any GPS Units being advertised in there.<br>

I've since thrown the catalog out so can't look it up sorry. It was definately on the left hand page up the top though. Also bear in mind that some stores have different prices and therefore different catalogs in different parts of town.

I started off with a Magellan GPS 300. It has no computer connection and no mapping is as basic as you can get, but it served me well and helped me find over 100 hundered caches before I upgraded.

Back in the days of Selective Error coding (30 mtr accuracy) I was also able to use it to play our own primitive version of Geocaching.

Entry level GPS units actually offer a bit more of a challenge to the game. They give you nothing but an arrow and a proximity meter. Sometimes I actually put the MAP330 aside and use the 300 to find the cache just for fun.

Nothing wrong with them if you don't want to be spood fed information.

Yes it is.
My eTrex is drop proof, water resistant, and you couldn't puncture the screen if you tried. The amount of abuse its had in the last few years is incredible. I've dropped mine 5 meters onto rocks, had it roll down dirt hills, smashed it into rock faces when I've slipped, had it completely soaked in Aeroguard!, used it in rain and water environments, had the screen poked countless times. Never failed once, and it has nothing more than cosmetic damage.

Hand held dedicated GPS units are designed to be rugged. PDA's are not.

What GPSr are you using that is so fragile?

A quick check on Ebay has the "Buy it Now" price at US$110, so AU$250 sounds very expensive, esp for a GPS without a serial connection. A standard eTex is much better value.
