Just about to buy my first device and have decided on this one as it seems mutlipurpose which suits me. Wondering if this model will run for a while yet or is there likely to be a newer model out soon as it seems to have been around for a few years.
Is there a preferred supplier for best price?

There are a couple of 650's. Does it have another name included like Montana or Oregon?

If its the Oregon 650 then try ryda.com
I love my Oregon 650. The extra $50 for the camera version is worth it imo ....it saves having to drag out the camera or the phone while on the hunt.

More interested in the Montana because of the larger screen and my older eyes.

I have the Montana 650T and purchased it from Johhny Appleseed (just google them). I love the screen size and the window mount that converts it to an in-car navigator, as well as recharges the internal battery.

As for it being replaced by a newer model I can't comment however Garmin seem to support their models for signifigant periods of time.

The Garmin Monterra might be what you're looking for, depending on your budget of course. It's the same size as the Montana but holds 4,000,000 caches, has an 8 MP camera and is Wi-Fi enabled with an Android operating system so that you can download stuff from Google Play such as a Wherigo player.

The monterra has me thinking now.
Please excuse my gps ignorance but this will be my first device apart from dedicated car gps units.
Perhaps if I share my intended uses...
We will mainly use it for mountain biking and 4wd to follow others rides I hope to upload, recording my own rides and especially backtracking when we get lost in out of the way places.
We will use it less for bushwalking and occasionally on the water.
We will travel a lot around Australia in the next few years so are keen to try geocaching.
Now I am having difficulty determining which is better suited to my purposes.
Thanks in advance for any opinions.

I've been told monterra is still full of bugs
Btw if you have a smart phone you should just go with the 600 instead

Make sure you do your homework. These units aren't cheap and they are pretty buggy (I've just sent my Oregon 650 back to Garmin after 9 months because the screen was jamming onto a menu item and wouldn't allow me to return unless I turned it off and back on. Garmin have actually replaced the whole unit under warranty. Note well, this was not a case of the screen freezing, which it also did for a quite a while before I changed batteries from the rubbishy rechargeables that they provide you with).

For reference, there are a couple of community Wikis that might be worth reading on the Oregon 6xx series and the Monterra before you shell out your hard earneds. The Discussion Forum at the bottom LHS of each page makes for very interesting reading in places to see what problems people are experiencing with these units.

Good luck.
