Post Android app tha t can do what a GPS Spot can do, any ideas?
I'll be traveling for a few weeks soon, and i got to wondering if ther is an android app that can perform the same functions or similar to the GPS spot.
without having to subscribe to the Spot gps services.
I was wondering if anyone is using a GPS tracker type program form thier phone...
I'm mainly interested in recording a track file to Google map, or other mapping service, that friends and family can view.
whith check in/ update way-points along the way.
preferably for free, but a low cost one off purcahse would be ok.
an added feature of an SOS function would be handy, but not relay necessary as if i have my phone, and enough coverage i can call/sms anyway.

I was looking for something like this last year, for similar reasons.

Most of the options were aimed at short term updates (more of a "I'm in the city, come and find me if you are too" idea) rather than regular updates over a longer trip.

I could use Atooma or other automation app to fire off a Tweet or other check-in regularly, but I couldn't see how to make any of them auto-include the location.

I ended up just manually Tweeting fairly regularly. I used Twitter because I usually don't and didn't want to clutter up my G+ feed, and there's quite good websites that'll take a Twitter ID and show the updates on a map.

Yes, PBL, i am tending to agree with something simple.
all these apps require you to turn them on and many you have to manually push out the tracks and locations anyway. and they are heavy on the battery use..
it is all starting to sound like too many things to remember to do , for it to be worth it .
i think I'll just go with putting pins in a Google map, when i have reception of an evening.
I do not want to take up too much of my hard earned leisure time.
