To download the OSM file, did you use the .nl address or osmaustralia as in my previous post?

I downloaded OSM for NSW (four .img files) from: http://www.osmaustralia.org/garmin.php
and dragged them into the Garmin folder. All works well but the maps don't have contours.

Is there a way to download OSM with contours?

As far as I know the OSM maps don't have contours. I have the OzTopo maps installed as well (factory) which do and I have to I have to turn the OSM maps off to see them (OSM overrides the OzTopo).

On my old GPSr (eTrex) I used Shonky Maps which I think had contours. Just Google Shonky Maps, but I haven't installed them on my Montana so I am not sure if the same process works - I assume it would if they are in and acceptable format.

I have now the same, can switch between preloaded Garmin topo's and OSM without contours. It's almost what I wanted :)

Still may try the Contour Aus overlay or something similar. I use maps with contours (currently on-line OSM's Cycle Map) whenever planning harder terrain caches. Would be nice not having to switch between Garmin topo's and OSM.

Thanks everyone for your help!!

One way to make this very easy is to create 2 different Profiles. Set each one up exactly how you like them, and then place a shortcut to each from each other. You can very quickly swap between them at the touch of a button.

Yes, that would speed up the navigation between the two maps (Garmin TOPO's and OSM). But I would really like to see one map: OSM with contours in it. Similar like the online OSM/Cycle Map.

My Montana always crashes when I click on the 'Elevation Plot' while the navigating is active.

I wonder if any other Montana owner has the same issue.

The main point is that the pre-loaded maps are in the garmin folder on the GPSr itself. To add other maps without interfering with the pre-loaded ones, put them the Garmin folder on a card. The img file(s) can have any name you like to describe the map - they don't have to be "gmapsupp".

Thanks maccamob, I removed OSM entirely, reset GPS a couple of times, but still doing the same - crashes when the navigation is active and I click on the 'Elevation Plot' button.

Meantime I found other Montana owners mentioning the same issue (with relation to the latest Montana firmware update) on Garmin's forum. Just would like to know if it happens on ALL Montanas (I would keep mine and wait for a new firmware update) or if some Montanas don't have that problem.

To be honest I don't think I have ever selected Elevation Plot while navigating (too focused on the cache I am heading for I guess  ).

I will try to remember to give it a go next time I am out.

I think you're right, I can live without checking the elevation plot on the go too. The more important features like tracking my way back to the car, etc. seem too work well :)
