Thanks again Geoff. I have deleted just the POI folder and it seems to have done the trick.

However I must say that this should not need to be done - the programming simply is not right. I am regularly disappointed at how, after computing has now been mainstream for ? 20 ? years, some programming just does not do what is required.

And I am actually fully qualified and experienced to make such a statement.

That having been said, I still like my 600!

Yes, it's a nice unit.

I've noticed a couple of different (and a bit annoying) behaviours since updating the firmware to ver 3.5.
First, the unit only stays in Mass Storage Mode for a minute or two when I connect it to my notebook, then it changes back to normal operation.
Second, the Setup/Display/Backlight Timeout setting now switches off the whole display, not just the backlight.

Finally, when I use Track Manager to save the current track, the unit used to bring up a new screen offering the option to delete the (now saved) current track and zero the trip odometer. It no longer does this.

Anyone else noticed this?

I've done some more investigating. The 3.5 update changed some settings that I don't remember being changed by previous updates.

The screen switching off with the backlight is the result of the Setup/Display/Battery Save setting being ON.

My Track manager issue was the result of the Setup/Tracks/Advanced Setup/Recorded Data Reset setting. I prefer the "Prompted" setting.

Still haven't found the answer for the Mass Storage behaviour.

I have only just upgraded to 3.5 and haven't used it in the field yet, but I found that -

- The screen saving setting, which was Off before, is still Off.

- The Track Manager - I have no idea what it was before but it is now on Track and Trip (since changed to Prompted.)

- When I do connect to the PC, If the unit is already on, it almost connects, then turns off, and I have to restart it again and all is well. It is the same with the upgrade.

Not much help there I am afraid.

Still more experimenting. I changed Setup/System/Interface from Garmin Serial to Garmin Spanner and back to Garmin Serial again, and all is now well again :D

I upgraded my firmware to the latest revision before I used the unit, so haven't experienced and problems like this, although I haven't done much with tracks as yet.

Spoke too soon. :( My best guess atm is that it will stay in Mass Storage mode only if I leave file window(s) showing the Oregon folder contents open. Close all those windows, and the unit drops out of mass storage mode soon after.

Version 3.8 is out (see http://garminoregon6xx.wikispaces.com/Firmware) although this looks rather ominous:
Warning
● 3.80
● Multiple reports of frequent lock-ups and crashes. (Crash 21)
● Many users report improved v3.80 stability after deleting all content in \Garmin\CustomSymbols\ directory. (Garmin DE)
Has anyone tried it?

While I'm here, I have a few issues with my Oregon 650.

Is anyone else having a problem with flash photography? In darkness, either the flash is unsynchronised with the shot rendering the photograph useless or it 'hangs' the unit necessitating the removal of the batteries for it to restart. It does, however, work perfectly for daylight shots (i.e. no flash).

I just got home and the rubber plug covering the USB port on my 650 has broken off and was loose in my pocket.
It looks like it just screws on, I hope I can get a new one as it's only a matter of time until I lose it.

I'm not surprised really, it always looked like it was just a matter of time ........

Have the issues with the software settled down now after all of the updates? Looking at upgrading the 300 before a trip to Europe later in the year, but cautious with all of the issues that have been experienced with the units as the updates have been released.
