Discussion about software such as GSAK, OziExplorer etc, as well as all things hardware, GPSrs, laptops, PDAs, paperless caching, cables etc

thinking about buying oziexplorer and a set of maps for use on desktop and pocket pc.

interested to hear what maps other ozi users are using in their geocaching efforts, particularly on ppc...

Well I don't have a PPC but on the desktop PC I use Natmap Raster 250K maps, maps from the phone book, maps I have found on the net and also maps from the refidex. You could use any map that could be calibrated to at least 2 points. I could be wrong but I can't see why it wouldn't be any different for the PPC

Being primarily based in Victoria I use the following maps with Ozi: "Melways", Natmap 250k, Vicroads Directory & 1:25k DNRE topo of Victoria.

I also have various maps of NSW SA & WA.

Regards

Ian

Thanks Ian - looking at the NatMap series - are you using the mosaic or mapsheets?

Based on what I sell through our shop and what I know other cachers use the clear winner is the Natmap 250k Mosaic. OziExplorer provides the calibration files so there is (usually) no problem linking the two.

SA & NSW both have their topo maps on regional CDs, SA CDs use Ozi Lite as the viewer so no problems there. NSW use Mr Sid which Ozi now interfaces with (haven't used this myself).
A privateer in WA has published a CD with all 200+ 1:50k topo maps in the South West corner with Ozi calibration files.

Plus there is Melways Melbourne, Fullers Adelaide directory, Hema and Westprint desert map CDs, Meridian Maps Victorian Deserts or Otways or Wombat CDs. The list keeps growing...

All available through your specialist Map Shop. :D

We have most of those maps too, but haven't found a way to get our Melways CD (which also has Sydney & NSW Central Coast) to work with Ozi. Is that the CD you have? If so, how do you get Ozi to read the .jks file format?

I have a set of ozf2 & corresponding map files. Can't recall where I got them from. I'm pretty sure they are the 2004 Edition melways.

Aushiker asked about the WA Raster 50k.

The publisher (Greg Harewood) has scanned about 233 1:50,000 scale topographic maps from the South West of WA, from East of Esperance to just above Lancelin. It does not include Perth metro or an area around Busselton. Images are individual maps as .ecw format, not seamless mosaic unfortunately.

Included on the CD is index map, place name gazeteer and OziExplorer calibration files etc.

CD is available from me at Carto Graphics, or locally from Perth Map Centre (formerly MapWorld) or Fremantle Chart & Map Shop. RRP is $99 but ask me for 'geocachers special'.
