Neat! I need a new watch  I was hoping they might produce a cheaper one that would interface in with your existing GPS somehow to provide a remote display without all the complexities of inbuilt GPS to allow for stealthy caching. ;) Presuming it syncs with GPS time it should be a very accurate time piece :)

"Battery life is rated at 50 hours in GPS mode or 6 weeks in watch mode." Oh.... I knew there had to be a catch... ](*,)

"Get accurate readings on your location no matter ... how dense the foliage is around you." Oh really? That's I'd like to see! :P I'm presuming they meant compared to being lost in a forest with no idea where you are, rather than they've solved the under canopy GPS reception problems...

You could DIY... http://farm1.staticflickr.com/36/103029 ... 62d009.jpg :P

You see that as a catch? It is a GPS in the shape of a watch, not a watch with a GPS in it. I actually thought that the battery life was pretty good.

I've got a Garmin Foretrex floating around somewhere. That sat happily on the wrist and I could change the display so it looked like a large watch. Useful for those caches that require both hands free to climb a hill or something.

But seriously, there are a couple of open source watches that may be able to be coded to do what you suggest....
the one I have been reading about is the Pebble... bluetooth interface to your android or Iphone, with a programmable apps for the interface....
could be a new market for those clever apps designers amongst us.

here is a link..

they are a lot less than $400.00 too.
Good luck getting 50 hours of battery life out of that setup. Bluetooth sucking down your phone battery and the watch battery. It is rather cool though.

I'd like to know where they hide the magnifying glass. Seriously.

There is very little (well no) detailed info on the Fenix - does it have a user-replacable battery? micro-SD expansion? (I suspect not) Is the 6 weeks between charging in watch mode with it running 24 hours a day or switched off at night? Spare me the marketease Garmin, just give me the tech specs! (Yes I'm a techie  )

It says it is a rechargeable lithium.

It is chirp compatible

If it is paperless (as the garmin website says) then I will consider buying one. What GPS chip does it have?
