Google Earth Mobile update

Post by CraigRat » 15 March 12 10:28 am

Just a heads up,

Google have updated the Android and iOS versions of thier mobile apps an now it FINALLY supoports external KML feeds.

This means the gca live feed at http://geocaching.com.au/caches/available.kml works and so should any PUBLIC kml feeds from the /my/queries section.

This is something that I've been waiting for for several years now and should be useful to many.

To use it, click on the link above in your mobiles web browser (or click the google earth icon on the main page from your mobile device) and it should launch google earth for you (at least that's what the Android one does).

I can't find a way to save that link within G.E Mobile yet though, so you have to launch the link every time you want to access it. Hopefully that will change in upcoming versions!

Nice one! Just tried it and no data came up but it was still loading and all available is probably quite a lot of data. Will try it with a smaller query.
No obvious way to save in the app but my mobile browser lets you save a URL shortcut on the 'desktop' so it's just one click to open the URL in browser and another to launch GE.

Nice update.

I spoke to Robert Lipe (of GPSBabel fame who now works for Google in the G.Earth area) on google+ about this and he said "We did some experimentation in that area but weren’t happy with the experience. We know it needs to be done."

So hopefully saving links comes soon!
