Uploading maps to Garmin Legend
I'm considering buying Metroguide Australia for my Garmin Legend, however I'm not too keen on the $180 pricetag. Is there an alternative to installing a map onto the unit?

yea, I was going to but I couldn't help but be curious about how it would function with more detailed maps. People say that he Base maps are adequate, but I'm still curious, just not curious enough to spend $180 ;pagsmky wrote: Leave it as it is...

If you want to see what the detail is like for MA, try the mapsource map viewer at http://www.garmin.com/cartography/ .
BTW It really depends on what you are wanting to do with the maps......and how fussy you are with quality......
Also If you use the GPS map page to orientate yourself, the base maps are sh#t.

Hi new neighbour geocacher from one suburb down
We also have the Garmin Legend (Not Colour) and also have the Mapsource CD on our PC but have never downloaded the maps to our GPSr. We never had the Mapsource when we started and we really enjoyed the sport without it. A big part of the fun for us is not having a clue what the area looks like before we arrive and navigating to the correct spot.
Now today, we still enjoy the sport as much, if not more than when we started and we aren't prepared to take the risk that it will take some of the fun out of finding the cache by downloading the maps. The mapsource gets a good use at home. Amongst other things, it keeps a log of all our finds and we use it to check out areas sometimes before leaving home, especially if we're going far from the main track (and a wrong turn may cost an hour or more) or we're short on time.
My recommendation is to do a few without it and then make the call.

... or if you just want to see what a map might look like ...
http://plrecgps.pp.org.pl/bin/view/GPS/UserMaps
follow the instructions for GPSmapper and GPSMapEdit (they worked for me and my eTrex Legend) and I found a good map of the Melbourne SE Suburbs at
http://mapcenter.cgpsmapper.com/maplist ... =VIC&cat=1
Now that I check the URL, there are a bunch of other melbourne maps there too.

I found it might have 80% of roads and tracks and POI isn't up to date.
It depends on what state you live in that determines how much info they put in that state, and in South Australia it won't show you the River Murray, The river stops at the border. thats why we don't have any water it's all dried up . Those eastern states pulled the plug on us.
