I would do this ONLY if you're also not worried about haxxors.
Security on a private machine attached to the ugly interwebs can be a nightmare and not something for the feint-hearted.

Seconded.
(And we don't just mean make sure you have virus protection etc.)
Regardless of how obscure or private you think your server is, bots WILL find it and WILL try to exploit it.

I guess that is true, and not for the faint hearted. I'm not a expert but I've VERY careful with my firewall and port forwarding, plus when I did run one from home it was for family only, and restricted by .htaccess....
