A use of SPOT satellite messenger device in geocaching
You may have wondered whether or how SPOT could be useful in geocaching. If you have checked out the SPOT http://www.findmespot.com or GPSOZ http://www.gpsoz.com.au websites, you will be aware that SPOT is no use for locating caches
But if like us, you venture off road on foot, bike or horse, then it can be a useful tool, even more especially if of an age where broken limbs and the like can happen more easily A+ and I are not infrequently away for a good part of the day alone whether mapping, trail riding or running. Usually we will see no-one else once off road so help could be a long time coming in our mobile phone black-holes. But even in the usual case of no mis-fortune we can make good use of the OK message to let the other know that we are OK and are simply going to be late back. Or we could use a custom message to indicate that we will be at the rendezvous for pick up in say 90 minutes.
SPOT receives GPS satellite signals and transmits via Iridium communication satellites. Its primary, although hopefully less used, purpose is to transmit an SOS complete with GPS location. Or for an incident not requiring emergency services, an Assist request message can be sent to nominated email/SMS addresses usually including family or friends.
To give you a visual appreciation of what it can do, I set SPOT to track a recent small geocaching walk. I sent messages both at the start and along the way. Also I uploaded photos I took. Check it out at http://www.spotadventures.com/trip/view?trip_id=241556
Hope this helps a few of you, Regards, Kenny

You can post updates to facebook as well! (Everything is ok, just checking in) which is really useful, i had a few friends go hiking down the south coast of tassie, and ..somewhere in vic/nsw, and it was so intresting to find out where exactly they were!
Also (kind of inspired by Rabbitto, shh)
The cache is not here.

There's lots of similar sites/apps for smartphones, but they're only useful in areas with cellphone coverage, of course.
A friend had this running when he was following a pilgrimage path in Japan, and it was a neat one-stop way of seeing where he'd been. These days, your Facebook or Latitude etc. etc. etc. updates offer the same thing.

That cache would have been so cool. Was the lowlight of the year for me last year when it never went ahead.caughtatwork wrote:http://geocaching.com.au/cache/ga2486 used to be a SPOT cache, but circumstances changed.
If anyone wants to make a SPOT movable live cache let me know, we've done all the ground work, and it works REALLY well.

The battery lifetime of a spot in tracking mode is maximal a week >> that doesn't work with a moving cache.

But if the cache doesn't move in 7 days and it goes dark, then it's still there.
If you find it, you charge up the batteries and away you go.
I think it's perfectly solvable.

Even better and just in case cachers take you literally, the batteries are replaceables. 3 x AAA lithium for up to 10 days. Reading between the lines I think AAA alkaline will work OK but for less time.caughtatwork wrote:But if the cache doesn't move in 7 days and it goes dark, then it's still there.

Just checked out GA2486 and found it was bracketed by the two we did and the two (Tom Swan's Legacy & Top Gun Anthem) we had to bypass due to a too long lunch. We will be able to include it and g_ordo's nearby when we next attack the hilly two.
I look forward to a SPOT moveable sometime.
