I just got the courage to try Swype and found it pleasantly easy!
May come in handy for logging too

A shortfall of Swype is that when you enter an unusual personal name, brand, technical term or geocaching name, it doesn't provide that sequence of letters as an option. So you then have to revert to tapping. If it always placed the letter stream as the first word choice, it would be much smoother.

I guess whether this is an issue or not might depend on your work and interests being such that unusual words are not uncommon. So maybe the solution is an option in Settings to provide your letter stream as theh first displayed word.

It can only guess words that are in the dictionary. So there is no way of it knowing that when I "swype" over nkoiuytrghjkmnhgtrertyuiuhgfdsdftrer, that I really mean "Norkmeister".

I actually appreciate the way it introduces new words. It is superior to the standard input method. When you peck out a word that isn't in the standard dictionary and then choose it over the phone's suggestion it automatically adds it to the dictionary. This has led me to have words I don't really want in there and then it keeps using them.

With Swype it lets you choose your pecked-out foreign word and then says "Add to dictionary?" so if you don't really want it to be in there you don't have to have it in there.

we have been out for drives over the last couple of days finding caches  using the eee pad to navigate 8) using GDAK as the data base and Ozi droid for mapping :D
maps are ubd nsw, nsw 1-250 and Festy's finest.
yesterday because the brain never transferred the sqlite.db3 file, GDAK used the last data file, so we missed some notes, doh.
but today i made sure the download was all there before transfer and things were sweet.
all in all this tablet/netbook has replaced both hardware like external gps and software such as gpsgate that you have to run on pc.
caches can then be logged when connected to our mobile ap.
i cannot recommenced Ozi droid any higher :D best of all in 3d mode, the attached photo sort of shows 3d
both GDAK and Ozi recommended

Sweet.

I haven't used Ozi on Android since one of the early alphas, I'll have another look!!

I do find it interesting that he'll be charging $25 for the release version....theres a few good apps out there (Lucus and OruxMaps) that do as much (Orux takes ozi format maps) and they are free...

Just been using it......... I think I'll keep on using my other apps for now.

It's certainly got potential though.

cool , but yep it does need development :!: to interface it with things like gdak and be a little more animated, with more options like those on the pc version.
most of all be able to open a gpx file from all sources, hopefully if enough people use it development might come quicker :)

OK, I bit the bullet and rooted my HTC Desire, using the procedure here http://www.t-mod.org/182-2/desire-tutorial/.
It looked a bit scary, but worked really well, and my phone is now able to support many more apps and the low memory restriction is a thing of the past.

I had all my contacts sync'd with Google and they all came back beautifully.
I used the T-Mod LeeDroid Gingerbread custom rom, which includes all settings for Telstra.
I had to choose between A2SD and Data++ version, but couldn't find any reasons why one is superior to the other, so went A2SD.

The video tutorials gave me confidence and everything worked as it should have.

I'm very happy with the result, and no longer get low memory messages and have to decline updates to key apps (such as GA Cacher).

I like c;geo, but the GC.com app is better as it can handle trackables as well as caches.

NeonGeo is probably one of the better ones out there, and it too can handle trackables and live data from GC and is under half the price of GC's over-priced app

I assume that since NeonGeo uses the same API as GSAK it will limit non-premium members to finding 3 caches a day...

:D The new Oziexplorer Beta 1.09 is a huge advance on 1.08 and with the addition of your own screen designer. I was toying with dragging the old Garmin Oregon out again but looks like I will give the Garmin Asus A50 another chance now.

http://www.oziexplorer3.com/android/ozi ... droid.html

I created a screen design which has 3 screens. The first screen shows a map which overlays my wpt file of geocaches. I have added my current speed, altitude, time and a button to move to the next screen.
The second screen has a large compass which shows the direction and distance to the next waypoint (geocache as selected) and a button to move to the next screen.
The third screen shows a list of the nearest waypoints (geocaches) and colours them green if I am moving toward them. And a button to move to the next screen which is the first screen.

If anyone has any really good geocaching screen design ideas, I would like give them a try.

Another benefit I have found by updating to the latest beta, my "more detailed" maps are recognised. Prior to updating, I had the default World Map, an Australia wide map at 250000:1 and the (sometimes) 25000:1 NSW maps in the correct directory. The program refused to load the 25000:1 maps automatically as the most detailed maps. I could select and load them manually prior to the update but now it happens automatically.
From what I can see, this latest update has made Ozi for Android equivelant to its Mobile PC version with the exception of being able to open the web page of the geocache in question.
I hope Des adds some on-line functionallity in future versions.
